I have a Vintage Hotrod 57' in Candy Apple red that's in need of a few dent repairs. It's mainly just a few dents on the front body of the guitar. I've taken the guitar to a few repair shops but they were all hesitant to do anything less than refinishing the entire guitar. Now I've been doing some research and apparently nitrocellulose is "relatively easy" to repair. Now how hard would it be to drop fill the dents myself? Is there a specific type of lacquer that I can purchase? What about nail polish? I hear that lacquer is pretty forgiving to work with so will I ruin my guitar if I screw up?

Learn to love those dents. They are badges of honor.

I already tried that but it didn't work.

Stew-Mac has a lot of good do it yourself tips... But they also make it look easier than it is.

Gotta say I'm with Minnesotastrats on this one. I try hard not to damage my guitars, but if it happens, it happens. I think any repair efforts short of refinishing the entire body are going to look worse than the dents, unless you really know what you're doing.

Dents and scratches are just part of the history of the guitar. Do not stress yourself about it

Contact Stew Mac and see if they can recommend someone to fix this since you can't live with it. This is NOT as easy as Stew Mac makes it seem.

So is it recommended for someone who has never done this before?

No. Even if you have moderate success, the repair will show to where you'll wish you had left well enough alone.

Not to be a total stick in the mud, but are you really going to touch up every ding as they happen on the guitar?

I'd live with it. The first and last time I ventured into those waters
[1969] it cost me a '58 Stratocaster.

Hahaha forget it, if you play the guitar at all, forget about keeping it pristine.

I absolutely baby mine, absolutely molly coddle it. To the point that a Strat I gave to my bands singer as a spare guitar got thrown across the room and smashed because he'd rested it against my Hotrods case whilst the guitar was in it.

Look at it funny and it gets dented. The only way you're going to change that is by putting a thick clearcoat on it. So even if you do repair it, it'll only suffer the same at a later date.

I agree with most of the guys here....leave em alone.
True story; I have a 1970 Strat that I bought new. When it was about 3-4 years old, I wanted to have some belt buckle rash repaired. I took it to the best repair guy in town who did an incredible patch job on it. Couldn't see the repair at all.
Fast forward 40 years.....that patch is now a clearly visible dark spot that obviously doesn't match the original finish. It's not a big deal...it's only about the size of a quarter, or less, but I so wish I would have just left it alone.

I don't get them that often. There's another guitar that I've owned for 12 years now that has 0 dings and dents.

What did you do to it?

Not quite sure what you meant there?
