Hi!

I have a Strat Plus in my shop that has a thin sounding middle pup. Immediatelly I measured the DC resistance, bridge 9.9k, middle 200k, neck 6.6k.

Is it possible to explode these pups up and repair them? I know rewind wouldn't be in place for these, but it might just be that the terminals are old. The guitar itself has been through a lot. I rewired the guitar partially because someone already fiddled with it. the terminals on the blade switch look a bit black and grey, but the seem sturdy enough. I'm gonna try and redo those too.

Thanks for any help on the issue.

Forgot to add, there's a noticeable hum when switched to position 2, 3, and 4, the noise loudens but the signal from the guitar weakens considerably.

All three pups are Gold Lace Sensors.

It looks like I just might solve the problem. I rewired it, when the pup was completely out of the circuit I measured it again, I made sure I took of more insulation and expose fresh wire. I got 5.8k, put it together and it works. For now :)

5.8 to 6 k is right for the Gold Lace. When they die, which they do if bumped really hard or sometimes for no Apparent reason, they read like 2k and the output is really weak. A while back (like a year or two ago) I had like 1 out of 5 NEW Laces that were bad. Jeff Lace called and apologized and said some changes were made with the help he had assembling the pickups. I take it poor quality control. They seems to be a lot better now.

I'd be surprised if, given their design, they would be repairable in the ordinary course.

I don't know if I would take any of xhefri's advise..... look at his soldering job on his ultra flame build.

His schematic is incorrect, and his soldering is at novice level.

That is odd, because in 1990 I was came in "first place" at the 24th Annual Black Oak Arkansas Soldering Championship.

Congrats on that Xhefri
I missed that years competition due to a schedule conflict. At least we know who will win the TROLL competition for the 3rd year running

You'd have to be a soldering machine to call X Mans soldering of novice level. Or a complete pratt.

It's some of the neatest I've seen, ever. Minimal solder, iron on just long enough to get the stuff to melt.
Wish mine was as good.

Thanks Nick, too kind. You on the road now? You said you would be traveling for 3 weeks? Sounds sweet. I will get you that Fuzz you made for me in the mail sometime in the next couple weeks. Your pretty handy with a soldering iron yourself mate!

I've seen a lot worse soldering than that in some guitars which cost ludicrous money!

I thought that red flame Strat was a beautiful build, personally. Of all the things to get hung up on, the cosmetic appearance of solder joints is a bit... odd. Might just be me, but I have absolutely no interest in what the soldering on a pot buried inside my instrument looks like as long as it's a solid, well made joint - which all of those above look to be.

Interesting observation.........coming from you. There's a certain level of mutual respect which has been maintained in these Forums these past six years since their inception. Kindly maintain it if you choose to continue to participate here. Obviously someone felt strongly enough about your lines of commentary to act to make that clear to you and, if Brad had not agreed, your stuff would still be there. Save for this, I will not comment further.
