also it has a 4 screw neck plate instead of 3, which might argue that it's not mid/late 70's. the plate has no serial.

Is the neck's truss-rod adjustment located on the headstock via the chrome "bullet" retainer?

And it does have the bullet style truss rod. Could it be the mim reissue? Or the squier with new decal?

Pull the neck and see if the heel was originally drilled for a 3-screw installation with provisions for the micro-tilt adjustment.

But what about the headstock? Have you seen anyone with the pat numbers so big? And with those numbers on a late 70's neck?

I think the patent numbers came off in 1976 when the serial number moved to the headstock from the neck plate. It could be an earlier 70s neck on a later 70s body changed over to a 4-bolt attachment.

I'm just weary of the decal placement on the headstock. The pat numbers are too big. The decal is also higher up and the "original contour body" is a little too close to the high e tuner. Also it says patented and not pat pen

I ran a couple of searches on gbase.com - you're right; the patent numbers on that headstock decal are way too large for a bullet truss rod headstock, and I think that it's a bit too large for the decal used on the 1968-1971 pre-bullet/4-bolt neck models. It makes me wonder if the decal was replaced with a faked decal at some point - as you say it seems to be really high on the headstock.

Hopefully someone with more hands-on experience with these will chime in on the decal.

I too looked around, and all large headstocks I've found pictures of the pat. numbers are quite a bit smaller than this, the whole logo looks suspect. but otherwise looks like a late 70's strat body, not sure if the logo was replaced, but looks like a legit bullet neck.

Agreed. Decent shape late 70s Strat with a faked/incorrect logo. The logo is most assuredly in the wrong spot too!

Nothing on the neck plate either? Chances are, there isn't a serial number... I don't think the old ones have them..
