I have a 1987 Squier that originally came with locking tremolo. The tuning pegs at the bridge eventually wore out, and the parts were hard to find. So I had a guitar tech replace the bridge with a standard non tremolo one years ago.

I was thinking of installing a Floyd Rose or similar type set up. To measure the neck radius, what is the procedure? This was my first guitar, made in Japan, plays like a dream, but has been hard to tune and cannot stay in tune if I want to use alternate turnings (which I do, frequently, but use other guitars instead...).

It's especially hard to get in tune after a string change. But, once it's in tune, it stays in tune.

Also, is there somewhere to buy the original locking tremolo these days? Would be kinda cool to have it back to stock condition!

A very handy radius gauge with instructions is here: The Pickguardian's pdf version

The original tremolo was probably a Kahler (maybe, just maybe 2720 Spyder). Pics, if you have them, would help.
If you still have the old parts, check http://www.wammiworld.com for spare parts.

But, reading your description of those tuning problems, how's the truss rod working (sounds like the neck moves a little too much...). And, of course, has the guitar been checked and set up properly..?

Yeah, that rings a bell. It was a Kahler knockoff I think. Truss rod seems to be ok, but I'm no more than an armchair tech, think I can do everything...
Did call Fender, he recommended another website as well. I have pics of the axe, just haven't figured out how to upload from my IPad yet. Old parts are long gone, pretty sure. It was 1996 when it was last worked on by somebody.
Thanks for the help!
