Black = black tolex ?? You are right , this is not a 1954

Without some pics to resolve the historical discrepancies, further discussion is pointless.

Are you suggesting that there were no Black/silver amps made in 54?.....All Tweed?

Big AL, yes amps in 54' would be tweed, the black/silver amps came in the 60's, it would be great if your uncle could take some really good pics and you posted them here, it's the kind of thing we really love to see, as you said how many original 54' strats do you get to see. Here is a good example of an original 54' Fender strat and amp(note the eary poodle case in the right hand corner) this set belonged to Curtis Ray Young from the 50' tv show Tiny Town Ranch.Image

I'm not selling anything.

I am trying to help my uncle put a value on his very vintage Stratocaster and amp.

I am a salesman by trade and this is not selling. this is getting an idea of a value range.

I have not posted any ads or stated any pricing nor have I given any contact info or a method of purchase..

I simply came here to get advice from Fender experts.

After all what better place to get advice on such items than the fender forum?

Maybe you should look up the definition of selling and what the difference is between selling and asking questions about values of vintage gear before you jump someone about rules that don't apply here.

Not trying to be flippant just saying I came here to get some advice not to sell the gear. If the gear is worth as much as I have seen and the advice I am getting we would seek to liquidate it at a professional auction house such as Christies or Sotheby's or find a professional broker to handle it....we are not talking about a $3,000 or $4,000 60's, 70's, 80's 90's or whatever vintage...we are talking about a serious first year one owner Stratocaster with a very low 4 digit serial number that maybe was even inspected and handled and approved by Leo Fender himself as it came off the assembly line . This is also a guitar that very well may be worth ten of thousands of dollars. It would not be prudent to try and sell such an Item on a public forum. Next year this Guitar will be 60 years old and my uncle purchased it new in the year of issue.....How many 1954 Stratocasters are still owned by the guy who bought them in 1954?

Welcome to the forum and all my apologies for the warning notice!

I would be happy to see a video showing this baby in action and (if possible) a couple of photos.. :P

No problem Pal and thanks for the welcome. I will get some pics of his gear and post them here....I know he has been playing that rig since I was a little kid....48 now....never knew the story behind it until just recently. but there seems to be a discrepancy between the story and the amp.....He is 83...LOL....Him and my other Uncle were playing many country venues of the day and they were on there way to do a television appearance on the Loyd Thaxton Talent show on a Toledo TV station when they stopped to get a cup of coffee and someone stole there gear out of their car and that is how he ended up with Strat and according to him the amp as well....his story checks out as far as the TV show because Loyd Thaxton moved to LA in 1957 to do a TV show on KABC channel 7 and later on KCLA channel 5 in the 60's so I am confused about the amp.....if Fender didn't start making black/Silver until the 60's ?????????....The other Uncle confirms the story.....he adds that they just got done doing the Audrey Williams (Hank Williams Sr.'s Wife) show on the Grand old opry he also adds that they met Hank Jr. he was 12 at the time. He claims he bought the the Guitar and the amp as a package......New $159.00 total

Ok spoke with my uncle and a couple of corrections......gave him the info you guys gave me and I told him about the discrepancies in his story with the amp and he said that he forgot when he bought the guitar and the amp, the amp was a tweed amp (couldn't remember the model) but it did not have reverb and he wanted reverb, he say's he must have forgotten about it but he moved from Toledo to the San Fernando Valley (So Cal) in 1959 so he must have bought the amp after he moved.......that makes more sense. if fender did not start making tolex covered Vibrolux amps until mid 60's. I did see a 1960 tweed Vibrolux for sale on GC....but most of the black ones are 1965, 1972 etc.

Also he wanted me to let everyone know that there are NO scratches on the back of the guitar like I stated but rather slight dents from his belt buckle.

He is getting me some pics of all of the items and the serial numbers on the amp...so I will have more info in a day or so...

Al

Would love to see some pics of that guitar. :D

I picked up a copy of the 2013 Official Vintage Price Guide at the weekend

It has early '54s going between $44,000 and $55,000
With later 'production' '54s at $39,000 and $48,000

The first non-tweed Vibrolux amp was produced in 1960. It was a combo model of course, covered in brown Nubtex and equipped with a single 12-inch speaker. The front panel was brown, with chocolate-colored "cupcake" control knobs. When Fender's amp line was revamped in the late summer of 1963 the Vibrolux carried over with significant cosmetic changes, specifically a new black Tolex covering, a blackface front panel, and skirted control knobs marked "1" through "10". The speaker complement remained a single twelve. This incarnation of the Vibrolux lasted only a year, replaced in August of 1964 with an all-new design that added onboard reverb and replaced the 12-inch speaker with a pair of 10-inch speakers. The cosmetic styling remained as before until model year 1968 when the finish on the front panel changed from black to engine-turned polished aluminum. New silver/white/blue grill cloth was adopted at the same time, replacing the white/black/silver blackface weave.

During the first 2 years of the silverface period (1968/69) Vibrolux Reverbs were featured with an aluminum frame ("trim") around the grill cloth and black vertical lines in the faceplate.

CBS added the infamous pull-out boost pot in the master volume control (circa 1976/77) before bringing back the blackface cosmetics in 1980.

The Vibrolux Reverb was discontinued in 1982.

Looks like a 1968 Vibrolux reverb amp. Could use a little cleaning up, but looks in tact( without seeing the internals) Drip edge is in fine shape.

The fender Support guy gave me a link and I think the AA864 means it was it was made in Aug of 1964......the 68's have a number like AA768...but I could be wrong...and yea it's still a great amp.....My uncle thought it was junk because it was old and only 15 watts....he said his new amp is great! it's all solid state and is 300W....Remember back in the day Tubes were the only game in town for electronics and when solid state came along it was like going from a mechanical adding machine to a Electronic calculator.......he is from that ere to have seen all of the new tech come along so he his view is a little different than ours.....From me telling him about all of this he is aware now....LOL

Not the same amp in the link as in your picture.
1968 had the silverface with the drip edge trim. Most likely still had the blackface circuit which correlates to your numbers. if you had a 64/65 the front panel would be black, and no drip edge around the cloth.
still a very nice desirable amp.
