Hi guy's

My name is Al and I play a Tele but I have an uncle who owns a 1954 Strat with the original case strap and vibrolux amp he bought brand new in 1954...he is 83 years old now and he is the original owner....the serial number on the strat is 1011.....he is interested in cashing in ...does anyone have any idea what it is worth?

Sunburst Stratocaster w/ tremolo, Slight wear, skirt knobs been replaced, some light scratches on the back, some small pieces missing on the white plastic pick up covers. (old and brittle)

Original fender Poodle case (not square) (Flat on the bottom, curved on top) covered in Faux Leather some pealing on back of case, Red velvet interior.

Original fender leather guitar strap

1954 Vibrolux amp Black with silver speaker screen all original except tubes (Were replaced in 1970's)

I have read some of the other posts and have been to e-bay...THIS IS NOT A TRIBUTE OR A RE-ISSUE OR A COPY OR A FAKE!......My Uncle actually bought this rig new in 1954 in Toledo Ohio!

Thanks
Big Al

The 2006 Official Vintage Guitar Magazine write for a 1954 Sunburst Stratocaster price is $35K to $40K.

For the 1956 Vibrolux ( there ar no 1954 ) price is$1600 to $1800

IMO price could be less than $35 K for the Stratocaster

He didn't buy any black-Tolex Vibrolux in 1956 either.

Maybe it is not a Vibrolux he is in Vegas and I am in sacramento so I cannot look at it

I will have him send me pics

It is a 1954 of some sort he purchased the guitar and the amp together same day in 1954. I do know the amp is 15 watts and it is black with a silver face

I thought the same, but he tells me he was headed for a gig on a TV show in Toledo mid 1954 when him and his brother stopped to get a cup of coffee and a slice of pie at a dinner. when they returned to the car someone had broken in there car and stole there matching Gibson's and amps ...so they hightailed to the local music store to get some instruments and amps so they could do the TV show.......he purchased both at the same time.....(Now Get this) the Strat with the case and the strap and the amp Brand new.......$159.00 total! ........His memories are very vivid on this matter so I have no reason to doubt him....other than the name on the amp .

I'm not selling anything.

I am trying to help my uncle put a value on his very vintage Stratocaster and amp.

I am a salesman by trade and this is not selling. this is getting an idea of a value range.

I have not posted any ads or stated any pricing nor have I given any contact info or a method of purchase..

I simply came here to get advice from Fender experts.

After all what better place to get advice on such items than the fender forum?

Maybe you should look up the definition of selling and what the difference is between selling and asking questions about values of vintage gear before you jump someone about rules that don't apply here.

Not trying to be flippant just saying I came here to get some advice not to sell the gear. If the gear is worth as much as I have seen and the advice I am getting we would seek to liquidate it at a professional auction house such as Christies or Sotheby's or find a professional broker to handle it....we are not talking about a $3,000 or $4,000 60's, 70's, 80's 90's or whatever vintage...we are talking about a serious first year one owner Stratocaster with a very low 4 digit serial number that maybe was even inspected and handled and approved by Leo Fender himself as it came off the assembly line . This is also a guitar that very well may be worth ten of thousands of dollars. It would not be prudent to try and sell such an Item on a public forum. Next year this Guitar will be 60 years old and my uncle purchased it new in the year of issue.....How many 1954 Stratocasters are still owned by the guy who bought them in 1954?

Does the Strat Serial Number 1011 say anything about the date of the guitar?

The number is on the outside of the neck plate

Only a rough guide to the year. It could be a 55, with a neck plate that has a 54 serial no' on it. Not a hill of beans when you're talking of guitars of this note.

What you really need to do, to get both pieces valued properly, by a real expert whos opinion on vintage instruments is respected the world over. Who will give you a written appraisal and valuation on the pieces. Is get the guitar, amp and uncle down to Gruhns Guitars in Nashville. Go on, give Uncle one last adventure eh!

IMO = In My Opinion .
_____________

From The fender Stratocaster By A.R. Ducchossoir page 72

1954 ; 4 digits in the 0100 and 0200 stamped ont the vibrato plate then 4 digits under 1300 stamped on the neck plate

That's a great Idea and that is probably what we will do. I have a guy in mind that is local in Vegas.....He was the guy who appraised the Mary Ford SG at $90,000 (Correction: over $100,000) (The Pawn Star guy paid $90,000 and sold it for $110,000)and is currently brokering a deal on a Jimi Hendrix guitar. I have been in touch with him and he want's us to bring the guitar and the amp to him for an appraisal. I just thought I would get some input from the fender community. Don't know about the trip to Nashville but that would be cool!..

Without some pics to resolve the historical discrepancies, further discussion is pointless.

Awesome info!.....I will get him to take off the tremolo plate today and see what it say's ......as far as I know there are no numbers stamped on the outside of the tremolo plate. so I'm figuring it's on the inside.

Thank you so much for your help this is the kind of info I was hoping to find by coming here.

I have seen these guitars sell for big bucks!......The Actor Richard Gere sold two of these 1954 Sunburst Stratocaster at Christies a couple of years ago.....they were est. to bring $30,000 to $60,000 each and sold for just under $30,000 each......My uncles guitar is of equal quality or maybe even better. right now Guitar center has two of them and are asking $56,000 for each of them....one of them has a very big patch of finish chipped off and missing all the way to the wood. and the necks look like they have mold damage.

I agree. I need to verify the model.
