Hi

I have a System 1 Trem on my newest favorite Fender, a 1986 Fender Katana!  For whatever reason I cant get the trem bar to...well...pop in. So I figure there must be something worn out, or missing.

Any ideas?

New pop in arms can take a good deal of force, until things loosen up a bit.

I suppose that could be your problem if the arm was never used. Otherwise, it is hard to know.

I had a system 1 on my old japanese strat .It got stolen years ago but prior to that I remember you had to really give it a good push to snap it in.There was also a small place at the base where you snapped the trembar in that you could adjust the tension with a small tool that came with the system. Here is a pic of that item

I have a mid 80's "E" series Squier with a system 1 tremolo. The arm does not "pop" in, rather it has a nylon bushing that goes on the trem arm and is held in place with a threaded bushing.

The arm does actually somewhat pop in and than you can adjust the tension of the arm with the wrench that I showed the OP.Here is a video of exactly how that system works. This should clear it up so the OP knows how to install his trembar and adjust the tension.I really miss the strat I had with that system that got stolen out of my house.I hate thieves
Note - not me in video ...just a you tube video I found explaining how to use the system 1 wrench

Great video explanation. Thanks for the link! I was on youtube and only other reference I found to this tool was a Scott Grove contemporary strat video.

Well that adjustment collar is only fingertight on mine, the tool is ancient history, but I pulled the coverplate off the back and can see the ball bearing and Im guessing maybe its seized. Im gonna put a little oil on that and hopefully it will depress.

I have a Contemporary 22 Strat but it came with a Kahler stock. This Katana is my first introduction to the System 1 setup.

It was a toss up between messing with the guitar, or working on the car this week. Unfortunately the car won out. Maybe Sunday I'll give it a shot ;)

You might try a brief squirt of WD40. Petroleum-based lubricants and guitar finishes frequently do not "play well" together.
