Anyone here ever heard of a Closet Classic Strat? What are the specs? I cannot find anything on the Closet Classic guitars. I played one today and I'm suffering from G.A.S. now. The guitar is a 1966 Mint green with rosewood board and big headstock and three position pickup switch. The guitar is also NOS. There was also a closet classic reliced 1957 Strat too that was the lightest strat I have ever picked up. I almost bought the 1966 but I have never heard of a "Closet Classic Custom Shop Stratocaster. Any info would be appreciated.

Here is Fender's description for the Closet Classic line:

"Built as if it was bought new in its respective model year, played maybe a few times per year and then carefully put away. It has a few small dings, a mildly checked finish, lightly oxidized hardware and aged plastic parts."

I once owned a Fender '63 Closet Classic Tele. It was a beautiful guitar and had the only realistic relic job I had ever seen on a guitar (very nice, subtle checking). You wouldn't even notice the checking unless you were looking at the guitar up close.

Their specs vary to match the year of the guitar in question. So in short on a 66 Closet Classic strat you might expect a rosewood fretboard, mildly checked finish, transition logo, 7.25" radius, single coil pickups voiced to match a real '66 that the Custom Shop has on-hand, brown case, etc, etc.

+1

However, the period-correct case for a '66 Strat (I once owned one) would be in black Tolex, with orange poodle-plush lining inside and with or without the blackface amp logo on the lid.

I'm trying to sell one of my guitars so I can go buy it. Hopefully it will still be there when I'm ready to buy it. The body is not reliced but it looks like someone put it in the closet and forgot it was there. It has just the right amount of rust on the pickup poles.

Yes they are fairly rare but they came in Candy Red , Teal Green Metallic and Firemist Gold Metallic. They were the standard colors .
I have had pass thru my hands the green with maple fret board and sunburst NOS and closet classic both also with maple. All had the blacktolex case Arjay has mentioned.
There is also a limited edition in silver but that has 65 pickups.
These were all pretty well priced originally and were only offered by Fender for a few years from about 2006. You could still get one made but it would cost.
The best feeling was the closet sunburst with a great but plain neck.
The model does not seem that popular else they would still be in the current line up.
I do have pics of all three somewhere....
I always regret selling the closet sunburst but at that time I had too many and you really only need one don't you?

Turn to page 21 of the 2005 Frontline catalog for a full set of specs.

The guitars mentioned are in the Time Machine line. Closet classic is the finish. I owed the 60s time machine closet classic. The checking was hard to see unless you looked real hard. I think this had a lot to do with it being Olympic white.
