I just bought a brand new FSR American Special and noticed when using the whammy bar, the guitar goes out of tune a bit... is this normal until the "new" parts get broken in? Thanks for any info.... and what does the FSR stand for?

A number of factors can cause tuning instability:

Brand new strings
Tired old strings
Strings incorrectly wrapped around the tuner posts
Defective tuners
Friction at the string tree or nut
Nut incorrectly slotted
Tremolo bridge incorrectly adjusted
Damaged or worn bridge parts

FSR......"Fender Special Run". An un-cataloged limited-edition product made at a dealer's specific request .

Arjay, I think you head everything on the head. It's been my experience that strings going out of tune when bent comes from the nut. I would take the guitar to a good luthier and have him or her look at it. For me I prefer a bone number that has been properly shaped and set up to almost everything else.

I've been noticing in the past few years that Fender has gotten sloppy with some very important parts of the manufacturing process.

There's nothing inherently or necessarily wrong with a corian or synthetic bone nut. I'd let a qualified luthier inspect the instrument before replacing anything. It's possible that the instrument merely needs a good pro set-up.

Okay, thanks for the replies, guys... this guitar is brand new, I just picked it up last Saturday and have played it a couple times so far.... the strings from the factory are wrapped around the posts quite willy nilly, so that could be some or all of the problem.... if problems persist, I will take it to a qualified person to get set up properly....

Brand new, IMHO, means right out of the box, never been played by anyone else but you. Off the wall and out of the store is never brand new as I see it. Headbanger's ball survivors they are. Something to think about if not the case in your situation. Good idea to have a reputable tech check it out and, if there's a serious problem with it, take it back where it came from.

Agree w Arjay....also there are varying definitions of using the tremolo. If you are dive bombing, definitely get a pro to look at it and set it up to handle that kind of use/abuse.

No vintage-style trem system can withstand repeated dive-bombings while maintaining the instrument's tuning stability. Serious shredding requires a Floyd, Kahler, etc -- preferably in conjunction with locking tuners and a roller nut.
