Hi!

I am having trouble with locking tuners on a customer's guitar. He lost the two of the thumbwheels and he ordered a set of new ones. None of them fit. It's a genuine Fender part, the thumbwheel on the left is the one fitted on the machines, the right one is the spare one that won't fit on the shaft.

I have checked with my Schaller dealer but he is currently not taking orders and is out of stock.

I have gone through all major Fender dealers and no help either, only full sets of new tuners.

The spare ones look a bit different and they have less material on them. I can only turn them one single turn then they start to bind. The bore of the hole also looks like it has only a single turn of a thread, the rest looks plain.

Any help would be appreciated. The guitar is Strat Plus, serial N386367

You're right; since your customer's guitar has the old-style Fender/Schaller tuners you will need a Schaller thumbwheel; the current Fender replacement part is for the Fender Deluxe locking tuners which I believe are made by Ping (and have the "F" logo on them).

You don't mention who your current Schaller dealer is - if it isn't Stewart Macdonald you might try them. Otherwise you might have to go to Schaller and have them try to locate the thumbwheels for you at one of their other dealers.

Hi getriba: it's a tricky problem.

As John C says, Schaller's North American wholesalers include Stewart-MacDonald, as well as Allparts and others - see here:

http://schaller-electronic.com/hp292196 ... cfbfXY1f8a

Though I've got a funny feeling they may not be able to help with out-of-production parts, supposing that's what this is. If so, there's two things you could try. First, send Rob Schwarz at Fender's customer services an email, including the detailed info and pictures you've given us here - or just a link to this thread. Rob is amazingly nice and if he can help you with discontinued parts I'm sure he will. Find him at

consumerrelations@fender.com

Supposing there's nothing Rob can offer then try Schaller themselves, in Germany. The English language version of their contact page is at

http://schaller-electronic.com/hp306/Contact.htm

In the past I've been surprised to find myself talking to the top guy via that page and he's been extremely helpful. Can't speak for him, but if there's a way he can get you what you need I'd be hopeful he will.

...Though I've a sneaky suspicion after all that it's going to come down to a full set of replacement tuners. I have actually seen those locking knobs sold as spare parts - but not for a long time.

Good luck - C

Supplimentary - curiosity piqued, I've just been on a hunt for spare Schaller locking tuner caps. I'm in Europe and we have lots of Schaller dealers... and I know I've seen those caps somewhere!

This is my local Schaller dealer:

http://www.touchstonetonewoods.co.uk/pr ... d-909.aspx

Wouldn't you know? The one item we're interested in doesn't have a photo. And in any case you wouldn't want to buy more caps without knowing for sure they're the right ones. Still, they're not expensive and Touchstone are listing them as in stock, so perhaps you could send them your photo and see if the type they've got match what you need. If you're in luck then trans-Atlantic postage won't add too much to the very moderate cost.

Otherwise, it's back to the earlier suggestions.

Again, good luck - C

Thank you all, that was really helpful info. I will have to order the Schaller part, I have no other option at the moment except ebay and even genuine Schaller dealers aren't sure if they will fit or not. Oh geez.

Anyone has two thumbwheels laying around?

If you buy a new tuner make sure it is a Fender Schaller tuner with two pins and not a schaller tuner with one pin. The Fender locking Schaller tuners will have two pins just like the Fender Ping Tuner with out the lock. The Schaller tuners with one pin are from my G&L Legacy's.

I will send Rob a question via email. What worries me the most is that the label on the bag clearly says it fits Plus/DLX guitars, it also has Made in Germany label on the backside.

I contacted a few Schaller dealers on Ebay and they all said their parts won't fit if my Fender replacement part doesn't either. I don't know if these guys are serious or not, but they weren't extremely helpful. StewMac does not offer thumbwheels as separate replacement parts. I will also contact Schaller's customer support just to clarify this issue a little further from the Schaller's point of view.

My last option would be boring out Ping ones, epoxying a brass bushing and then threading it to fit Schallers. BTW anyone knows what threads are Schallers?

Just curious, why you would go the boring and epoxy route instead of just getting a full set off of someplace like ebay since you can't find just the caps?

I agree. Modifying the new knobs is just not worth the candle, in terms of chargeable time.

Fender or Schaller just might be able to help, if they happen to have some of the old spec parts lying around and are prepared to send them out. But I'm guessing that's a long shot, unfortunately.

I suspect where this is heading is informing the guitar's owner that he'll have to pay up for a new set of machineheads - and then think about keeping his locking knobs screwed down tight in future, so as not to lose them. After all, once is a misfortune, twice looks like carelessness - to paraphrase the famous gentleman.

Cheers - C

I know this is an old thread, but in case...
I just did this to an '93 strat plus with a replaced pin: just put a piece of plastic on the bottom of the hole, and it's working again ;) !!
the replaced gets a little higher than the originals, but it doesn't matters (IMHO), as it works ok.
Best regards!!
