hi, i need help...i bought a mij strat 1986 (f007170) and am trying to find out the model, after taking off the neck the back was stamped with the markings G (in red) then ST-362V, is it a 62 re issue? under the scratchplate there is a red star stamp, the selector switch has crl made in usa stamped on it, and the pots read m250k. ive been told numerous things about the 62 re issues that dont match my strat, like stagerd poles on the pickups, stamped fender bridge etc..confusing to me..please help...and any ideas which pickups these are, they have a solid bar on the underside and are 3 single coils..i had this imported from usa to the uk this year and was told it was all origional, probably a japenese export guitar, plays and sounds good, heavy though..thanks

Hi arcticdonkey, welcome to the Forum.

ST-362V certainly sounds like a variant on one of the ST-62 models, so I'd be surprised if that's not what you've got. Fender Japan are always ringing the changes on their base models so I have no idea what the 3- and -V bits meant back in 1986 - for comparison here is their current Strat range, just for interest's sake:

http://www.fenderjapan.co.jp/products_stratocaster.html

I count eight different '62s in the current catalog - including one with a Floyd Rose ( :!: ). So, as you can see, they like to mix things up and probably did back in the '80s too, though I don't know MIJ guitars from that period well enough to say more.

What sounds wrong to me is those ceramic pickups. I can't say for sure that they didn't put those into MIJ Strats in those days, but I've got an ST-57 with Japanese pickups and they're proper staggered AlNiCos as you'd expect them to be.

So I wonder if this Strat of yours has had a pickup transplant? I'm not in a position to say so certainly, though, so don't start a dispute with the seller about it just yet. Still, I bet the rest of the guitar is nice, right?

Cheers - C

That "62" in that code may not mean it's a 1962 reissue.

In the old days, the code was the price, in this case, 62000 Yen.

What logo is on the guitar, spaghetti or transition?

hey, the fender logo is not the spagghetti one, its the other.....yeh the st-362v might just be a part number or something like that, its just when you see the 62 there and the v you start asking questions!!! maybe just coincidence ay...

Ah-ha, that's interesting. I didn't remember that - though I've a feeling you've told us about it before, orvilleowner. Pay attention, Ceri! :)

So from the number might arcticdonkey's Strat alternatively have been priced at ¥36,200? Man, even by the standards of those days that would have been an attractive price!

On the other hand, my ST-57 was not ¥57,000 - sadly. But it does say ST-57 in the neck pocket. Whatever the number means, I'd like to see a photo of the inside of the pocket, please, arcticdonkey.

Meantime, Orville, do you know if they sometimes used ceramic pickups on MIJ guitars in the '80s? A budget model, perhaps (at either ¥62,000 or a super-budget 36,200...)?

Cheers - C

A lot of the Japanese makers used the same kinds of codes. The codes found on the neck often didn't agree with the actual model number of the entire guitar. Things are better nowadays, though. And it seems that they have stopped coding the price in the model numbers (and other numbers). (Maybe they got tired of having to change all of the model numbers when they increased prices.)

Anyway, it seems that the OP's guitar is NOT any kind of 1962 reissue model.

The budget models, yes.

The pics look "funny" to me. Check out that 12th fret dot spacing.

iirc the code broke down to Model/Price/A defining feature or variation of the guitar from the base model.
for instance:

The base model would have been the ST-362
ST-362-V was Stratocaster/ 36200¥/ V-neck (my memory is fuzzy, V might have meant vintage trem, but I think it meant the V-neck.)

A friend had an ST-362-F which had a Floyd Rose, I'll try email and see if he still has it.
I have also seen ST-362-FH which was Strat with Floyd Rose, and a Humbucking bridge pick up.

Later naming conventions referred to it being a 62 reissue, but this one seems the earlier system.

Also there were cheaper versions with unstamped saddles and cheaper pick ups.

This is all relying on my memory though, so it might not be 100% accurate.
