A pickup will only generate sound whilst a string is vibrating above it.
Sustain has everything to do with setup and texhnique and little to do with anything else.

The biggest influence a pickup has on sustain is it's magnetic pull on the strings.

^ agreed^

Longer string vibration=more sustain.

Turn up the volume on your amp. Dig in with your fretting fingers. Clean up your articulation.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

And don't raise those single-coils too close to the strings. It'll have the opposite effect of reducing string vibration.

Not only that, but if you actually lower the pickups closer to the pickguard and turn up the amp's volume a touch to make up for the slight drop in output you tend to find you get a bit more sustain as a result. Works with all types of pickup on all styles of guitars.

The right amp and a tasteful array of stompboxes can make virtually any guitar sound like a million bucks. IMO they're more significant factors than the type (or brand) of pickups that are installed in the guitar.

This is why a lot of guitar players play so loud.
