I'm looking at a Strat circa 1990, serial number e - 929569, that has some characteristics that I'm familiar with from the Plus versions from that era. First off, it has the standard single coils. But it's PURPLE. Most every purple Strat from around then is a Plus (Lace pickups). The owner ordered (new) a blue Strat, not a Plus, but got this purple color. Also, it has string retainers for E/B and G/D that are straight T shaped with smaller rollers on the arms of the T, not the usual "mushroom tree" retainers. Now, my unfamiliarity with Strats of the time might be obvious if these retainers were common, but the color is the point here. Was there a purple color regular Strat offered in 1990, or did he get a hybrid built from a body (and possibly other parts) intended for a Plus?

Sounds like an American Std Strat, however you need to post pics if you need comment on the colour.

I'll also add that Midnight Wine can sometimes be mistaken as purple, also Electric Blue. Both were American Std colours during that time.

It's also possible this partscaster was made up from an American Standard neck mounted into a Midnight Purple Jeff Beck body.

Someone has dropped a loaded Plus pickguard on it.

Thanks for the comments. Comparing the color with the ones you've mentioned, I can say for certain it is not electric blue or midnight wine -- it is definitely midnight/candy apple blue. It's very much more purple than blue to the eye, but who am I to question Fender's names? If we were Najavo everything from green through purple would be the "same" color.

The neck is quite definitely an American standard with roller type retainers, and the pick guard is loaded with standard electronics, but the color is a Plus. If it's a partscaster, it was Fender's doing, as he ordered it new and got it still shut in the original packaging with the owner's registration card inside. I'm thinking it may have been something to do with the assembly line, maybe bodies were lagging behind so they took some from the Plus line to keep things moving. So, I reckon we'll just consider it a standard with a Fender stock color that didn't happen to match the catalog selections, barely a collector's item but hardly worth anything extra for it.

Thanks again.

Hi DynaSoar: I've a feeling we were talking about purple '90s Strats on another thread quite recently. Could you be thinking of Fender's Midnight Purple, number 76 on their chart, which came in somewhere around the end of the '80s or beginning of the '90s? Check it out here:

And here's a pic of a different guitar in the same finish:

I have a strange idea someone was talking about a Jeff Beck Strat in that colour a few months back - that wasn't you, was it?

Cheers - C

@Ceri

The pictured Jeff Beck Strat you've posted is modified with an Ultra pickup assembly.

Original JBs feature a push-push button to cut only the inner coil from the gold lace humbucker as opposed to the Strat Ultra which sports a 3-way toggle to select one of the coils from the humbucking red sensor or both (full humbucker mode in series).

It's an Am Std. as the Plus or Ultra series, have no string trees. They have locking Sperzel or Schaller tuners and a Wilkinson or LSR roller nut bridge.

Looks like a loaded Ultra pickguard was retofitted in this beast. Or the neck is not original....
