Hi,

I recently noticed the birds eye neck of my 1997 PD-3 '58 relic strat is slightly warped.
A luthier told me, this could happen to birds eye necks and it will never stop to warp.
He further told there is nothing I can to. A repair w/o replacing the neck will not be possible.

Any idea what can be done except replacing the neck?

Thanks in advance.

Greeting from Germany.

Ralf

My Warmoth next has some birds-eye to it and has also warped a little bit too. For my neck it has a slight back-bow to it. To counter it I've move the strings away from the neck until it is playable.

Hallo Ralf,

welcome to the forum. Sometimes it is the trussrod stucking to the neck and twisting it. Find another luthier and tell him/her to remove the nut of the truss rod and lubricate it.
If the neck is straight enough loosen the nut of the truss rod one turn left and see if the neck is still twisted(maybe you have to loosen the nut more then slacken all the strings first). Be carefull because if the nut stucks then you could crack the truss rod.

All the best,
Robin

+2!

If you can't DIY contact a professional luthier to do the job for you.

Thank you very much for your helpful answers.

One thing I did not mentioned before:

The guitar was shipped from Germany to Spain. Could the difference in temperature, humidity cause the neck to wrap?

Thanks again!

Ralf

Welcome!

Although birds eye necks are incredibly popular, they can be incredibly unstable for as I'm sure you know, "birds eyes" are merely knots in the wood. These knots in turn, interrupt the length of the wood's grain as a whole from working cohesively.
