What am I missing about 1997 MIA Fender Strats. Everytime I see one for sale the person wants close to what a new Strat would cost and more than what a used 2007-2010 would cost....What is so special about 1997?

If you're talking about the 1st generation American Standards, 1997 was another pivotal year for that series; it marked the change from the TBX circuit to the DeltaTone pickup system which included a hot bridge pickup and a no-load tone control for the middle/bridge pickups.

I bought a '96, but I wouldn't pay new guitar prices for a used guitar. When older Strat gain value, the newer ones gain value, too.

A good example of this is how the high prices of '50s & '60s Strats drove up the price of '70 Strats. When I bought my '77 hard tail Strat in 2003, it was worth $750. Now it's worth 2x that much now.

It would have to be at least 20 years old and dead mint condition to be worth new list price. Even then, it would have to be something really really special, like a strat plus in Taos Turqoise or another super rare colour.

But the notion that old guitars drives up prices remains true. I've heard an argument about mid sixties & 70's Fender guitars not being worth the values that they are today, because of the hit or miss QA issues Fender had back when they were made. Some collectors think its a joke. Perhaps it's because they're angry they sold their 70's Strats & Teles for $500 bucks 20 years ago, and now realise that they could have sold them for at least a few grand now? I'm not sure. However it seems to be the "old boys culture that tend to argue this on the Internet as I guess they were right amongst it all back then. I have heard an opinion that one collector said that he only considered post-war to late 60's worthy of a collection and anything outside of these times a waste of energy- obviously the views of an old vintage fender collector. When I was a teenager, worn guitars fetched a significantly lower price based on their condition. But since the arrival of 'Relic', they have shot up in value.
All things aside, it is what it is. The market dictates itself. Early mint nineties stuff is beginning to rise in price. Just don't fall into the trap of paying top dollar for something that has artificial wear on it.

I thought maybe a 1997 Strat should be in my collection. I saw three 1997 Strats and the people selling would not budge on the price. I thought they were asking too much. I'll just keep an eye on the three strats to see if the price drops.

IMO, you aren't missing anything. The guitar itself should be fine, but for the prices I've seen, you'd be better off just going down to your local GC and getting a brand new one....with really nice pickups too.
