so just found out the body im working on has 56mm spacing according to the pilot holes already drilled. this is a bummer as it seems more difficult to get a bridge for it, especially as I want gold hardware on the guitar. and cant spend loads on a bridge.

secondly, i'm now concerned about how the E strings are going to run along my neck. is there anything on the neck I can measure to find out if the strings are going to be too close to the edges ? I could clamp the neck and set up a mock bridge/string set up to look, but that's extra effort.

last idea is to fill the pilot holes and redrill for a spacing more suited to the neck if need be. the 'holes' are only actually a couple of mm deep at the moment.

Filling the holes sounds like your best bet
Dowels and wood glue , then re drill

Hi moochy: 56.4mm is the standard string and mounting screw spacing for US Strats. There are more aftermarket bridges available in this format than any other and you should have no difficulty finding one.

This body is drilled for a six-screw bridge, is it? So any six-screw Fender American Strat bridge will fit. You're in the UK, right? So alternatively if you want something a little more affordable then there's several bridges of that size in gold at different prices here:

The cheapest 56.4mm bridge available in gold on that page is £23.50. That ain't going to break the bank.

All Fender Strat necks are the same width at the heel (approx. 56mm) regardless which factory they come from, and that's the important issue here. So matching a bridge to a neck is irrelevant: put it out of your mind.

With respect to Ted (above), don't do this unless there's no possible alternative. Doing a good job of dowelling and redrilling requires reasonable carpentry skills and equipment (a big enough pillar drill); and there is always the possibility that the wood will never be quite as strong afterwards, just at the place on the body where strength is needed most.

Sometimes we have to dowel, but if we can avoid it - avoid it! It's not necessary in this case.

Cheers - C

These are very good and fit anything. I've used em in the past and really like em.

I ended up buying the 'hipshot style' one, purely because for an extra quid I liked the look a bit more. 8)
