Can someone tell me where I can find the serial # on a 2004 AVRI Strat? A buddy of mine supposedly picked one up in a trade and there isn't a ser # in any of the usual places which leads me to believe he may have been duped. We haven't taken the neck plate off yet or looked in the body cavity though. The guy told him he had all of the hardware replaced with Callaham vintage and the pickups replaced with Lindy Fralin Real 54's so I'm hoping it's the real thing for his sake. He traded a mint Taylor 314ce for the Strat with the original tweed case and an ATA case and a brand new Marshall DSL40c so I guess he couldn't have done but so bad anyhow

The serial number on an AV Strat should be on the neck plate and should start with a "V" followed by a number. I don't believe the serial number shows up anywhere else like on the underneath of the pickguard, on the neck heel, or in the neck pocket.

The serial no should be located on the neck plate at the top between the two top screws. It should start with a V. There should be a date stamped on the neck heel but no serial. The neck plate is easily replaced. If the seller cannot provide a receipt or other documentation I would suspect the claims made...

+1

And if the seller replaced the neck plate for any reason, even for "just because", then he's diminished the value of the guitar significantly since the instrument's bonafides are now suspect.

Walk away.

So any other way to tell if it's an AVRI other than the serial #?

Yep it'll look exactly like the guitar it's pretending to be. I.E a 54RI will look like a 54, a 62RI a 62 etc.

I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole if he couldn't produce a receipt, case candy (which will have the serial no' on it) and open up the guitar for inspection.

And then I'd be looking to pay low.
