I'm getting started on converting my MIM Plus Top from HSS to SSS and I'm looking for opinions in regard to pickguard choices. The plus tops come with parchment pickguards but I already have an aged white SSS pickguard so I'm considering using it when I do the conversion. I'm not sure if its overkill, visually, with the plus top, though. I do like the idea of "personalizing" the guitar so it isn't like the factory-assembled plus top.

Let me know which you think looks best. In the first picture, I just laid the aged pearl pg on top to get an idea of how it would look. The second picture shows the factory-original parchment pg..

IMO the original is nice. The pearloid clashes a bit, but some people might like that. To each his own.

Yeah, now that I really look at the two, I'm leaning toward going with a parchment pg and using the aged white pearl pg on my candy apple red Strat... With the plus top and color variations in the neck, the pearloid on the plus top might be too much..

Pearloid guards go best with solid colors in my opinion. I vote parchment... :)

I usually don't take part in these highly personal preference -polls, but OK, here goes:
The guitar itself has a high bling factor, so it would really benefit from the pearloid.

(BTW, did I mention I'd always choose pearloids over anything else...
Edit: and a matching headstock... and gold hardware... and...)

I like the parchment better imo. The pearl is too busy with the flame top. My 2¢..

An aged pearloid pickguard would look sweet with that FMT Plus Top. :P

Personally I would keep the humbucker and put a white pearloid HSS pickguard on it.

Another vote for the parchment on the Plus Top and the pearl on the Candy Apple Red.

I think the pearl is too blazing white, it needs to be aged pearl, even then it might not look right. Personally, I would also consider a tortoise shell guard also. Perhaps even a Black/aged white/black guard too ;).

Out of curiosity, did you reconsider the HSS configuration after buying the guitar? The same colour combination can be bought with SSS configuration. For me, I love a humbucker at the bridge, it makes a Strat very versatile :)

In regard to why I picked the HSS over the SSS version, my two main criteria for picking out a plus top was how well the the maple top pieces matched and the visual appeal of the neck. This particular plus top was the best I've seen.

I planned all along to replace the pickups so HSS vs SSS didn't really matter in my purchase decision. A parchment SSS pickguard is pretty inexpensive. As far as keeping an HSS configuration, I haven't totally ruled it out since this guitar isn't gonna look like a traditional Strat even if I go SSS. I do favor the more traditional Strat look, though.

I've been considering a number of pickup options -- Dimarzio Area 67/58/61, a set of Seymour Duncan pickups similar to the SSL2/SSL6/SSL3 setup (but a tad more midrange oriented), or maybe even a set of Fat 50s. Right now, I'm leaning toward the Dimarzios but I'm not finished researching pickup choices...

Decision made -- I'm sticking with parchment for the plus top pickguard. I don't want the pickguard to visually compete with the plus top and neck. Thanks for the opinions and suggestions! The aged pearl pickguard is now on my CAR Strat, as shown below.

That's a nice looking maple neck. :!: Is that a gloss finish?
