Have to admit, I am the proud owner of a 2012 American Standard Strat, maple neck, candy cola, with custom shop 50s pickups and aged hardware. So what right? Well, it is the first really nice (expensive) guitar I have ever owned. When I first got it roughly two months ago, I seem to remember no noise in the pickups regardless of which ones I was using. Now, for some reason, I am hearing noise when I move the selector switch to the neck, middle, and bridge pickup positions. When the 5 way selector switch is in neck/middle and middle/bridge it is absolutely noiseless! Not sure if they're supposed to be like this, or if something is wrong with the soldering, or some other issue. May I ask you for your thoughts on this matter?

All single-coil pickups are susceptible to electro-magnetic interference --likely your guitar is fine. If the extraneous noise has recently increased, look elsewhere for the reason (poorly-wired AC outlet powering your amp and/or pedalboard, bad instrument or patch cable, proximity to newly-acquired electrical devices in the room, etc).

The noiseless positions (neck/mid, mid/bridge) on the switch are noiseless because the mid pickup in 2012 AmStandard is reverse wound for hum cancelling.

Here's a link that maybe helps to know what you're dealing with, and some instructions if you want to mod the guitar:

Nope, I put the link there more to give the OP a little background on the whole subject, since the single coil characteristics seem to be new to him/her. I, of course, should have thought a lot harder and should have rephrased that "if you want to mod the guitar" to something like "if you find anything in the link that may be wrong with your guitar" (like a loose ground wire).

But, as always, I was certain that someone in the forum will find the time and stamina to go nitpicking. 8)

@Jmattis, single coil characteristics are not new to me, but I just didn't realize that the fat 50's only had a reverse wind on the middle pickup; which give it hum cancelling in positions 2 and 4. Which explains why I hear noise on the neck, middle, and bridge pickups. Thanks for the info though guys, my misunderstanding solved. Much appreciated.

It is NOT the reverse winding on the middle pickup that cancels the hum. It is that the middle pickup AND either the bridge (pos 2) or the neck (pos 4) are wound in reverse and oppositely polarized with respect to each other that cancel the hum. They operate exactly like a humbucker does when in the even number positions, as far as hum cancellation goes.

You could have your strat with RWRP pickups on the bridge and the neck and a standard wound pickup in the middle and the effect would be the same.

+1 all the way around there. I'd be looking for external sources for the noise...is the OP playing next to his monitor? Is the fridge in the kitchen cycling? Did someone change the lights from incandescent to CFL? Is the amp properly grounded?? Also an obvious one but if you use pedals, check your batteries!

Basically it sounds like the OP bought a Strat :-)

Peace,
Jim
