Have a FSR vintage ash blonde American Special with Texas Specials strung up with 9's. Lately the sound seems thin. Maybe I'm getting used to my Standard Tele (Texas Spec. PUPs) and Les Paul strung up with 10's. What is everyone else using?

I don't recall a formal poll on this...

Put me down for 11s.

Cheers.

10s for electrics, 11s for acoustics

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

You get more of a tone difference by using the knobs on your guitar and amp than a string change will do. BTW: Billy Gibbons, of ZZ Top Fame, uses 7's. Still think yours sounds thin?

Hi sjruvolo. In answer to your question, I use 11s.

As for what you're describing as a "thin" sound, I don't think this is due to string gauge. An argument may be made to the contrary but in my opinion string gauge has much more effect on feel than it does on sound. I can easily feel the difference between 9s, 10s, and 11s when I'm playing but I can't tell the difference listening to someone else play.

HTH

Cheers!
BM.

Play with your amp and knobs on your guitar. I like 11s on my guitars, 10s I can live with but 9 just feel to light for me I'm kinda heavy handed

I use a hybrid set, 10's on the bass strings, 9's on the high strings.

If you didn't know that Billy Gibbons runs all his guitars through a guitar processor and they are all adjusted to sound like his 1959 Les Paul and it doesn't matter which guitar he uses, his tech just pushes the button to the correct guitar program.

That way all the guitars Billy plays are at the same volume and texture.

Put me down for 10's ; 10's just need a trem claw adjustment
(11's are too much work to reset the guitar up)

I'm using hybrid sets too. I buy singles in bulk of half steps. It changes between guitars too.

I have 10's on my 2 Strats and my Tele. I tried 9's but they were like rubber bands. The 9's made pulloffs all but impossible, for me. The string bending is lots easier, but I roll with 10's.

Comfort before anything else. Why anyone would deviate from what allows them to play at their best is beyond me.
