Ok, I'm going to replace the stock trem block on my 03 MiM Strat with a steel block. Should I also replace the stock bent steel saddles with stainless steel block style saddles?
I have always preferred the looks of the bent steel saddles. Is there a difference in tone?

Hi DocRock77. Conventional wisdom is that block saddles have more mass and give a bit more sustain: bent steel ones have slightly less sustain but more "vintage" Fender twang. So they say.

I have both types on Strats: perhaps I can hear that difference and perhaps I can't. I do find the block ones slightly more comfortable under the hand when palm muting, though to me it certainly isn't important enough to bother switching them out. I keep my modern Strats modern and my vintage-spec ones vintage.

But it's perfectly reasonable to feel differently: you pays your money, you takes your choice.

Cheers - C

I'd like to improve the overall tone and sustain.

I'd like to improve the overall tone and sustain.

I have heard that solid ss block or brass will improve sustain and so forth.
I dont know how much better the quality is for US made Strat hardware compared to MIM. My SRV Strat has the vintage style trem unit and sustains great. BUt that may be a product of my amp too. I guess what I am trying to say that unless there is an issue with the set up now a new trem block/saddles may not make that much of a diff.

Replacing the zinc block with a steel one is like night and day. The saddles would be an improvement, but nothing like changing the block will.

Want to go real high-tech..?
Erikoistuote Syvanen, Finland

Prices from 150€ (~200$) and up. Special, secret steel alloy "tuned" to enhance the guitar's sound. Sorry, only in Finnish...
