It's not. And you can take that opinion to the bank.

The control-cavity with its extra "shoulder" is that of a '62-format guitar but the body lacks the worm rout within the bridge pickup location. And it does indeed look like pine -- the striations in the grain are too numerous and too uniform to be ash.

This is a partscaster......case closed.

Indeed it is. No arguments there. I think the body is a tokai st-80. The stamp on the neck is ST80. The pickup cavities were routed but you can see the round holes where the Tokai guitars are known for. Also the worm route is identical. Here is a link to an ebay add for reference. Looks like the neck is the only real Fender part so sorry for eating up strat forum space. I will post a pic of my ugly 74 Mocha Brown strat later :)

No problemo......you had a legitimate Strat question and we provided the best answers we could based on the pics you posted.

Rawk on!

Hi guys: I can certainly be wrong on this, but does anyone else think the body wood looks like pine? Personally, I have nothing against pine, and it's some nice straight grain. But surely it can't be a Fender?

And I've a strong feeling that lacquer is DIY as well. Fender didn't spray that (look at the horns, the burst under the pickguard, etc), and I doubt it's a Japanese copy from that period either.

Wherever this guitar started out, it's had a load of stuff done to it on it's journey through life, over and above the sad Dremel excavation in the cavities.

I'm pretty sure it's ash my guitar tech said it is. We also noticed it was originally a 10 hole pickguard but was converted. Pickups were routed and as for origin I am unsure.

Mmm... Well, I wouldn't want to get into an arm-wrestling contest with your tech over it - but that would be mighty tight grain for ash. Mighty tight. I'm unconvinced - and I've worked plenty of ash.

Still, no worries.

By the way, I bet it's not a Tokai either. They were much more accurate than that. Unprovable, of course.

Cheers - C

The most important questions are: "Does it play well?" and "Does it sound good?"

Yes that really is what counts. This guitar plays very well and fits like a glove. Makes my 74 strat feel like a dog in comparison. The neck is slim enough to comfortably sit in my hands but I am curious if the neck was refretted and shaved down on the radius a little as it is just a little to easy to play compared to my other strats. In fact it feels like my contemporary model necks. Tone is nice pickups are 62" Custom Shops. Body is nitro finish. Definately a keeper in the collection.

Those are the most significant attributes for any guitar, whether store-bought Strat or ubiquitous partscaster.

The only thing left that's original on my '79 Strat is: Neck, body, tuners and neck plate. The electronics are Van Zant and the bridge is Callahan, but it's the best sounding and playing Strat I own.

Sadly, the guitar is being refretted and being rebuilt after some awful mold and water damage.
