Greetings stratoholics,

Lets try a question for you...

How would you like getting the most Start pickup combinations, in series and in parallel, with a simple rewiring of your standard parts?

Well, all you have to do is change your "mood"... Enjoy!

And here are some details and comments...

My targets for this project were:
Keep all the standard strat tones.
Additionally get both Tele-like and Humbucker-like tones, all with the same wiring.
Use no extra parts so the mod is easy to apply with zero cost, as well as keeping it easy to control.
Not to alter the guitar looks since a Strat always looks best "Leo Fender" style.

The rest of the gained possibilities are just a by-product that hopefully will prove useful to someone.

The mod combines two of the most popular strat mods into one. The classic "Blender" and the not so known "Bucker" [humbucker] from an ACME wiring scheme. "Looper" is a by-product of the two when the pots are fully turned at max. "Master" is a mix and match of various values on both pots to create a nearly infinite amount of tones.

Before anyone goes any further they should try the options provided by the "Blender" and the "Bucker" moods. These two alone can provide you with the most popular tonal varieties. When these two become clear, it should be easier to play around with "Looper" and "Master"; if you ever decide to go that far.

Check the below Quick Guides that will hopefully clear the sky.

FENDER MOOD: Strat as we know it.

BLENDER MOOD: Use the B pot to allow parallel mixing of bridge with neck at the switch positions where bridge and neck are active.
Popular tones: With your 5-Way at pos.1 or pos.5 you get Tele-like tones.

BUCKER MOOD: Use the C pot to allow series mixing of the middle pickup with either bridge or neck.
Popular tones: With 5-Way at pos.1 or pos.5 you get Humbucker-like tones.

I will not go into further details to avoid confusion. I'll be here if anyone needs some help.

For everyones benefit please try to stick to the following writing convention if you have any questions (or if you want to show off a tone you got through the Master Mood).

Convention Example:
B9.C0.S5 which means (B Pot at 9).(C Pot at 0).(Switch at 5) which means Blender mood with Bridge parallel to Neck.

Hoping I have not killed you with all the above please have a go and post your feedback here for everyones reference.

BR,
GRE2608

Thanks, but I'd go with the "Memphis Mod" myself.

Hello guys,
thanks for taking the time to send me your comments.

Of course there is nothing there to sell. Its just something that came up while I was trying alternative wirings for my Strat... so just a good ol'fashioned "share you mod" post.

Maybe my enthusiasm to describe what it does made my write up a bit too "happy".

Thanks again!

BR,
Savvas

While mods like this are intriguing because on one level, I find that I am quite satisfied with the Strat's regular 5 tones. I did modify my American Standard with a "series blender" that allows me to get the quack positions in series vs parallel. I did find the bridge and middle in series to be quite useful for heavier distortion sounds, but hardly use it these days.

How abrupt are the series/parallel changes when using the stock audio taper pots? I'd be tempted to try something like this but for anything like a "blend" control I'd probably experiment with either linear pots or dual pots.

Hello GilgaFrank,

the truth is that linear pots are easier for controlling the amount of blend. At the same time since the result is more accoustic rather that "numeric" you find that's is quite easy to get used to the behaviour of an audio pot.

All in all this mod is all about enjoying several pup combinations that a Std Strat does not support, such as the Telecaster (SS Neck+Bridge) or a Blacktop Strat (Humbuckers) tones. That is why one could even use two SPDT ON-ON switches.

Respectively its not exact science and thus the type of pot would play very little part up to a point. Of course if it turns out you like these "other" characters of a Strat, a linear pot would make things a bit easier.

Best of luck if you try the mod and please post a reply with your feedback.

BR,
Savvas
