Hi,
Although I have been playing guitar for many years, I only bought a Fender (Classic Player 60s Strat) a few months ago, and I am intrigued and sometimes mystified by the differences between the Strat and the other makes of guitar that I have played and/or own.

For example, a few hours ago I decided to put the Strat into open G tuning, and was very surprised to find that it took about 10 minutes of constant re-tuning for the guitar to achieve a stable tuning.

Similarly, when I restored the guitar to standard tuning, although the process was quicker than tuning to open G, it still took a few minutes to 'settle'.

At first, I thought that the strings might be to blame (because I have not yet changed for ones that were put on and the factory just before the guitar was shipped to me), and then I wondered about the bolt on neck. Then I realized that I have used much older strings on the other, non-Fender, guitars which I have put into different tunings on many occasions, and I have never had this kind of problem with any of those sets of strings.

Is this usual for a Strat, or other Fender electric guitar?

I am asking because I can put different gauges of strings on my other guitars, or put them into different tunings, in a very short space of time, and I have literally never experienced these kinds of problems.

In fact, after I had restored the Strat to standard tuning, I put my Epiphone G 400 into open G without any problem, in under 2 minutes, and did the same with my Epiphone Casino; I have done this previously with my acoustics, too, without experiencing anything like this.

It is interesting to me that the situation might be attributable to differences in design between Fenders and the other guitars that I have played and own, and I would appreciate people's opinions about the explanation for this.

Thanks,

For me...not unusual in either case. My bridge floats...what about yours? That is the difference.

After many years, I have the strings, springs, neck and other variables set perfectly and it rarely departs from standard tuning, and is easy to return.

However...if I change tunings or string gauge, that delicate balance is lost, and the strings, springs, and neck are going to find another 'happy place' which satisfies the new tension...but it will take some time for the tuning to hold and the bridge may not be floating at the same angle.

On my buy list...something with a fixed bridge so I can change tunings faster and more successfully...but I'm keeping the Strat!

Hi HeyJoe42,
Many thanks for your reply.

I think that you are probably right, because I do have a floating bridge, and the bridges on all of the other guitars that I play are fixed (however, I do have a floating bridge on a guitar that I have not played in a few years, and might experiment with trying some open tunings on that guitar as a comparison/experiment).

Many thanks for your reply.

Look on the bright side - you now have a perfectly good excuse to buy a different Strat for every tuning you wish to have. Just like the Pro's do.

Hi SNick,
Yes, I am way ahead of you on that one (and am quite adept at blaming my friends for that kind of GAS) :)

Something like an old yellow Telecaster tuned to open G without the lowest string?
