I am ordering a used Fender Road Worn 50's Strat in Black and I want to make it my own little "Blackie" seeing I can't afford the real deal Clapton Strat, and I have played them before and the Tex-Mex pickups are great but I want to go either Fender Vintage Noiseless or Lace Sensor Gold's. Opinions?

Between the two I'd go with the Gold's.

My two cents:

Don't set off on a "tone quest" unless you have a really laser-focused idea of what you're going for. Having swapped out the pickups on my Strat at least five times, I'm finally realizing that the original (Standard Strat, Mexican-made) bridge pickup) was right where I needed it to be.

Because swapping pickups can be a hassle, it's important to have some direction and get your choices pretty close to the mark. It's not like plugging into a different amp, or even changing batteries on a pedal, right?

In my case, I've got a replacement neck (Warmoth) that has an extra fret. This requires that I take the neck off everytime I need to get under the hood.

I don't mean to discourage you. I'm all for customizing to "get it right" for the player. My advice is to live with your guitar for a long time. Make music with it. If it's not singing to you in the voice you'd like to hear... things will fall into place as you explore pickup options.

By the way, I think the Clapton Strat has some mid-boost circuitry in it, doesn't it? And, for a while, his signature instrument was equipped with LACE Sensors. Also, he's a big middle-pickup guy. Something often overlooked but to be considered.

yes Clapton's does have a mid boost, but I have been a Gibson guy, I have an SG and a Les Paul, yeah kind of like early Clapton lol, but I just don't play them like I do a Strat, and I like the fact that Clapton's has the boost to make it more humbucker like and I have always loved Clapton's tone, whether it was early or now, so I figured he used the Lace Golds and Fender Vintage Noiseless. I just don't like the Tex-Mexs, they are good, but not my style
