I agree that the Clapton necks got too white at some point. The early Clapton strats looked a lot better.

I have a MIJ 54 neck that is pretty light, might have to try this out sometime. Thanks for the tips.

Update: I let mine sit a few days after playing and the tint lightened just a tad from the original deep amber. Which, in theory is a good thing! Hence, you can do it a second time as I did and the tint is perfect. The more I play it the better it looks. Ill update with pics again soon after a few weeks in play. Cheers.

Update: I applied a second coat on the goldtop as the first coat faded more than I wanted. Its perfect now, even with some of the uneven parts, it looks amazingly vintage.

For what it is worth, the shoe polish method works pretty well, too. It may be a bit of a low-rent method, but the results were excellent. My MIM Strat and Squier both had the same neon-white neck finish. Here is a pic after applying the shoe polish to only the Squier to show the contrast (the Squier was exactly the same as the Fender before applying). I did to the same to the Strat since it worked so well on the Squier. Just my experience...

Have you played it to see how it is going to hold up. Looks pretty authentic to me.

Played it last night for two hours live. I noticed parts were just a tad lighter, but actually better. Not orange in tone, but more brownish yellow. Im lovin it. I actually may do it a second time for kicks and see what it does. This is my main player, so I love tweaking and creating with it.

Awesome work Jason, please keep us updated how the tint holds ..

I have a few necks that would love that kind of look.

Great idea!

BTW how did you came across the idea?

No residue whatsoever. I just applied a heavy layer of Kiwi dark brown, waited five minutes or so, and then rubbed it off. What was left was nice tint instead of the neon-white. Just too easy not to do. Just my experience, though ...

I hate to sound like a pedant, but when you say "rubbed it off" what does that entail? :D

Scouring ooze from the surface or giving it a few whacks with a shoe brush?

The final layer that dries on top is a fine orange type film from the dye. I noticed a rag didnt get it very well, but my bare hand picked it up. SO, I rubbed it down, and let it sit for a week, and then did it again. It Will lighten some over time, but after a year of playing it, I reapplied a cream shoe polish brown, and it was an outstanding look combined with last years work. The only reason I went this route was the sheer brightness of the Deluxe Neck Factory color. Almost white. Remember, this was done over the poly, so it was not on sanded or bare wood. It will slowly wear, but thats the look I was going for. Ill try to post a current pic tomorrow for everyone to see results a year later.

Just rubbed it on and off with a rag. No orange or whatever, though. The way you see it in the pics was right after doing it, and still looks like that to this day.

Be sure to post your experience. I'd be very curious. Thanks, by the way.

Wonder how this tint will work on my American Std with a sonic blue body? The neck on mine is pretty light. Maybe one coat of this dye might work. The neck on my 60th Ann strat is dark, but it blends in perfect with a desert sand body
