I've got one which needs the same treatment.
Thanks for sharing!

At first I was very nervous when after wiping and drying, it seemed to fade and leave an orange abnormal top layer that was blotchy. I took my bare hand and began to kind of massage and rub the entire neck, and the yellow tint popped. You are gonna love it!

I wasn't implying that you didn't do it I just wanted to see how dark it got compared to the original color

Good deal. If you look at the stock photos from Fender, they are truly that white or whiter. If you look at the pics of heel, you see a faint line of bright white that that dye didn't touch. That's how white!!! too white for me. The dye at first goes on mega dark, even with light application, but when smoothed around evenly, then wiped, it turns out great! Almost a little too dark and orangey, but once you let it sit and fully dry, the top film that's orange buffs away with your hand. Tried a paper towel, but only human skin seems to make fade just right.

How hard was it to remove from your fingers. I have a custom shop EC strat with a very light neck which will stay that way but I'd like to darken up my jimmy Vaughan strat neck alittle

Nice. I wonder how well it would work on the Clapton Models satin finish? They had some years where those necks were so white it was ridiculous. I would think with a satin lacquer finish it might not work the same.

Not hard at all. Remember, the part you remove with your fingers is just an AFTER film from the final drying process. I definitely used gloves, and some rags for first part. I dried her off, and let her sit for An hour or so, then I took a very light abrasive cloth, and buffed the back of the neck for smooth early worn finish. The front frets and headstock were then rubbed by hand and minute amount of orange was on my hands. It then washed off with just a small amount on the heel of hand which dissipated within an hour.

And, being yours is a custom shop strat, anything will just be a topper. It's already a sick guitar! :D

Im sure it would work. My necks on my Deluxes have a high gloss headstock, but a satin finish on neck front and back. But, Dont take my word for it. If you do it, just go for it. However it turns out will be your unique self modified strat. Not another one like er. :P

Disclaimer: My goldtop neck did have a couple of extra dark patches after final product , but I believe they were due to the shoe polish attempt prior. A light buffing and they mellowed. Looks like a true road worn, but not trashy neck.

Guys, please note: If you do this to your strats and it doesn't go as good for you, don't stalk me and kill my dog! lol. No, seriously. I just bit the bullet and said, "whatever" and made the changes. You have to be that way to make such a drastic change to such costly machines. But, in the end...It's all yours and yours alone. Cheers, and happy, uhhh, dying? lol.

That vintage tint would look pretty nice on a heavily figured maple neck :P

For sure. The light grain in mine popped a tad, but if you have a heavy grain it would look great.

Thanks. Its been a day since they've been done, and the tint got this cool vintage vibe to it now. Lovin it. It has a few imperfections in color as Im not a painter or a luthier, but its all character and I love em. Rocked my goldtop hard tonight. Peace.... :P

Have you played it to see how it is going to hold up. Looks pretty authentic to me.

Played it last night for two hours live. I noticed parts were just a tad lighter, but actually better. Not orange in tone, but more brownish yellow. Im lovin it. I actually may do it a second time for kicks and see what it does. This is my main player, so I love tweaking and creating with it.

Update: I applied a second coat on the goldtop as the first coat faded more than I wanted. Its perfect now, even with some of the uneven parts, it looks amazingly vintage.
