Also, if this is indeed a three-piece body that just gives me a lot more satisfaction - because it shows marvellous skill on the part of the guy who chose and joined the timber. The one thing I admire even more than beautiful grain is the craftsmanship of the builder, and that may be what we're seeing here.

I have to agree with this--but it might cost more to pay a guy who could do this kind of grain-matching and joining more than it would to buy single planks of alder! Even in Mexico. Just my opinion.

That's a really nice example of a DP body Turbokev. I used one in my build, but mine shows 3 distinctive pieces. They do have a nice grain though.

On the other hand, for years I thought that my CS Strat was a one piece.

Intense scrutiny revealed that it is actually a 2 piece. I can live with that

boxbang both of those bodies are great..

Even with 3 parts, that DP body has great grain..
and the CS..super nice.. I'm a sucker for transparent finishes that show the grain..

This is the Am Del I never should have sold.. regret it to this day.
It was a 2 piece right down the middle..

Again, I'm not saying a 1 piece is an better or worse..just an anomoly you don't see very often..
(but you do see it..)

As Ceri said, you have to admire the workmanship in joining the pieces.
The CS has been beautifully matched on the lower edge, right around to the back. It would be hard to match the grain on both ends though. The giveaway for me was on the flat end behind the neck, the grain meets in a V.

And I guess it's relevant to show you how the 3 piece turned out.

I would add to this discussion that sometimes what appears to be a 1 piece is actually a 2 piece body. The joint is not perpendicular (squared) but angled matching the angle of te grain.
What is called a " Trompe l'oeil ".
Look closely at the grain on the bodies edges and see if there is a slight almost imperceptible difference in the grain pattern...

As far as the MIM's being a lower line and thusly not getting the attention to detailed/figured Maple or Ash or Alder... I would say that is not the case.
The neck I'm using for my Tele build is an A or even AA grade figured Maple neck.
I don't think it is by coincidence but rather a concious choice from the respective dept.
...Although Xhefri may be better poised to discuss wether or not it is so... :?

Speaking of builds and 1 piece bodies. I bought last fall from a local lumberyard a baulk of ash. 7 feet long x 14 inches wide x 1"-7/8 thick. From this I cut 4 blanks. I traded one for some parts I needed and the other 3 I cut 2 Strat bodies and 1 Tele body.
I paid about $107.00 for the baulk. So if you can find the wood then it is not expensive although getting it cut and routed to the shape needed and finished is not possible for everyone. But you can always search for a wood shop to do the work and buying the correct templates is not expensive.. Just a Thought...

You want a 1 piece body? Warmoth will sell you one! Choose your color, too.

Technically...technically, this is a 3-piece body...but you really have to look closely at the end view to catch it. Between the pickguard and output jack it is hard to notice from the top. It is a beautiful piece of wood. Not bad for a standard factory build...back in the day...

You can see the seam in the lower-right if you look carefully:

The seam is clear in this view:

A patch is barely visible:
