I think it is another tone myth... the choice of leaving your backplate on or not should be solely based on how often you change your strings as most backplates don't line up well with the string holes.

Lots of pros leave theirs off... but their roadies are probably changing their strings twice a week or more.

As to musicians like Jimi and SRV... with their playing styles how often do you think they break a string?

Verdict is in: on my 2013 Am Deluxe, the backplate off made no changes to tone. However, on my 2012 FSR Aztec Gold Deluxe with the anodized pickguard and backplate, it made a difference. A little more of a banjo-ish twang on the 2 and 4? But, I like it better off. :?:

I used to run mine off for years to do the bomb noises in Star Spangled banner by Jimi before Purple Haze.
Then I by chance just put it on one day to see what my white pearl one looked like and wow!
I noticed it enhanced the tremolo springs and gave it more of a reverb.
It was forcing the spring vibrations upward it almost seemed like.
Anyway I have been putting them back on for about 2 years now.
I ran them off for about 30 years.
But I can hear a difference in my little Roland cube practice amp and my 100 watt tube half stack.

I don't know if I can hear the difference. I've never tried to test it.

Some of my Strats have their covers on, some don't (the more used ones).

Being a pastor, and living in Tennessee, we like our guitars to look road worn, but our buckles gotta stay shiny!!! lol.

The rash kept happening due to the anodized aluminum backplate. That stuff is like straight sand paper!

If it makes a difference, tonally. Imagine how much better it would be if you took all the plastic round the front off too.

utter nonsense, nothing less.

Off, on guitars I play. Cos I like very quick and easy string changes.

They have holes in them that's really not an issue is it?

On. The way it was designed. Now, where did I put that shiny bridge cover thingy?
