I did it because SRV and Jimi did it. Good enough reason for me...lol

It doesn't change the sound in anyway, but it does make getting to the bridge holes easier.

Most of mine are on, but a few I purchased used that were missing it, I never bothered to replace. Each of my guitars sounds different, but not because of a missing trem cavity cover.

Which is better, ash or alder; rosewood or maple?

Hi jason: you have it exactly.

On. Or off. Both work for me.

Cheers - C

Split the difference, cut it in half, install half, leave half off.

I was thinking diagonally, like a sandwich should be cut. A sandwich doesn't taste the same when cut horizontally or vertically.

Really, I might leave mine on if the access hole was bigger to accommodate a decked bridge. Although, on my Blacktop Strat, it does seem to sound a little different with it on, and I prefer it off, both for sound and access to changing strings. I think that the sound difference with it on is the small echo chamber effect on the springs, and although subtle it is apparent to me, at least on that guitar, with five springs and decked bridge. The extra sound produced from the springs doesn't need any more echo. On other guitars I haven't noticed this same effect, but prefer it off for easier access.

The blacktop has the swimming pool, or universal route, which adds this same type of slight echo effect to the sound. I remember reading that Billy Gibbons prefers this route for the same reason.

It is a matter of personal taste.

Cover plates are where Leo put the secret mojo and it remains there to this day. If you don't have one you'd better be damned good on your own merit and I mean as good or better than Jimi or Stevie because your guitar's got nuthin' without it. In those days everybody knew that if you wanted to be a rock god you had to start out with no cover plate which forced you to develop your own mojo but it only works if you start out that way and stay that way forever. Once you play with the plate you're locked in; forever relegated to being merely human with the plate and totally sucking without it.

True story.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Muahaaaaa! M.O.J.O. More Of Jimis Output!

I'm taking mine off, as mine is anodized aluminum, and the last two Sundays I played on worship team, my two nice buckles got totally gacked and sanded by that bad boy. I'll be sure to encourage the MoJo to stay in, and not find another home! lol.
