buy a gibson, there! that put all the stratexperts in their place! seriously try a squire or a mexican, dont buy a us strat until your sure you want to keep playing. my first guitar was a cheap Hondo, but it was only after i was sure i wanted to be a player i saved up and bought a decent strat, even though i mainly play gibson i would never be without a strat, the industry standard  my friend.

Yeah, I agree with this. But my concern is that a beginner may likely just go with what the salesman strongly recommends. That being said, the salesman's recommendation may be spot on ...

Let me say this, though ... If the $380-400 territory is do-able, at least STRONGLY consider getting the MIM std strat. These guitars are sooooo good, they are easy to mod, and never need to be "out grown". It is the "can't go wrong" choice, for sure.

Extra credit: Haggle with the store. They will move on the price. And ... work a hardshell case into the deal. You can thank me later.

If you want to play guitar don't set yourself up to fail. Inferior guitars sound even more inferior in the hands of a beginner. Discouragement will soon follow. No excuses. Bite the bullet and fork over the cash for quality. If you loose interest you can sell it for a small loss (and loose probably not more than the cheap one cost) but more importantly, know that you gave it your best shot.

Just an observation: I notice the original post was 16 May. I suspect the gentleman made his choice and has been struggling with his new guitar for a couple of months by this time.

Right now he is probably more concerned to discover what a barre chord is, than worry over the relative merits of Squiers, MIMs and MIAs...

I wonder what he ended up with, after all that advice?

+ 1 and emphasize the "forever" - With a nicely modded MIM, often one will pickup the more expensive brothren only to be surprised at how little the difference.

Buy the box set (squier), unless you have an amp or loads of $$ or buy a amp and a guitar of your choice. 8)

I have heard great things about the Japanese Strats. They pop up on EBAY from time to time, and you might be able to snag one for a good price.

I'm still pretty much a beginner myself, having bought my guitar in January. Here's the set-up I got:

- Squier Standard Stratocaster (Candy Apple Red): $199
- Roland Microcube Amp: $125

I'm also taking lessons at $80 per month.

So far, I'm not out too much cash, but I'm having a blast. You will too!

P.S. Check out the guitar at http://www.squierguitars.com/products/search.php?partno=0321602509
