You can use that ice pick as a weapon! I mostly use my neck pickups, but sometimes the ice pick comes in handy to really cut some heads.

True enough . I generally mod the bridge pickup so it has a tone control . So if I dont want ice pick, I can roll off the tone knob. For lead stuff I usually use my neck mostly.

I have heard many guitarist use the bridge pickups and sound great. I have a hard time with it though. I never liked playing through it. But I must say in a band environment it is much dif than just playing on your own. I just roll the vol off a tad and that helps...

Any other suggestions? I prefer drop in pickups like the Fender Hot Noiseless or Vintage Noiseless. :)

The NOISE drives me nuts! How do you guys deal? They sound rather thin for gain....I preferred the stock single coil pickups in my 2006 Highway strat! They were beefy like Rio Grande pickups.

You won't be 'dropping in' either of those pickups -- both require new volume and tone pots, possible a different value tone cap as well.

True that, when it comes to pickup changing and selection I suggest opening another bank account as you are going to spend a bank roll before its done. I dont think I have ever dropped in just one pickup and said oh ok Im completely satisfied now.

Well, what is the suggestion? The Fat 50s are decent but no way to gig these with the hum and noise!

For noiseless Strat tones I favor the DiMarzio Virtual Vintage pickups.

Are they like the DiMarzio Virtual 54 Pro? Also, the Andy Timmons are nice.

Let me see how much an issue the Fat 50s are at our next rehearsal. I recall them not being a big issues last time as if I could solo and they seemed quiet....so maybe the noise gets lost in the band mix and the only time I hear the annoying noise is at home playing alone? Maybe.

I do wish the Fat 50s were a bit fatter and punchier.

Mebbe you need a fatter, punchier amp......?

Try a '64 Vibroverb or a '66 Super Reverb.

My ash hardtail with Fat '50s sounds heavenly through my Vibroverb.

The injectors were awesome too.

I have lots of amps and have had plenty of strats, Gibson and PRS through these amps and I pretty much do not like single coils so I think that is part of the problem!

Doesn't the noise bother you?

It does not. I have a full-size aluminum shield beneath the pickguard and have shielded the lead-in wires from the output jack to the control cavity. It's not totally quiet as with my DiMarzio-equipped Strats but it's adequately silent for stage work. I have not used it for studio recording though.

I run a Line 6 Spider Valve stack, this is a top end high gain hot rodded tube amp designed by the tube guru Bogner himself. It has a noise gate built in, I run 12k and 13k single coils that are mega powerful and I have no problems with noise. Even humbucking stacks produce a synthetic sound at best. To get the true single coil tone you must use a single coil. I have a volume knob I use also that I am all over on stops and starts.

I play loud distorted rock like Deep Purple Aerosmith Zeppelin all the way to Godsmack and BLS and I run a shielded pickguard as Arjay mentioned. My other guitarist makes more noise through his Bugera head with EMG Humbuckers than I do.

Hey Arjay, do you know much about the Vintage Noiseless? I have a set I got in trade and put them in a Tex-Mex strat and it sounds ok on some amps, and on some it sounds like I have the tone rolled back in most pickup positions.

I have it wired like the Jeff Beck Strat, with only the .022k Cap, but other diagrams show using another cap and a resistor with these pickups. Wondering if I should make any changes to it? Originally I was just thinking of going with a .047k cap, but now I'm wondering if I should add the other cap and resistor?
