But I am betting that you guys who really like the Fat 50s, do not play any hard rock? I think if you play rock or hard rock, you may prefer noiseless or humbuckers.

I am not a big fan of boutique pickups. I actually find Rio Grandes to be the best single coil pickups made.

What is your difinition of "Hard Rock"? I'm a Classic Rock, Blues , Jazz Country Player player. My Strats are just fine with that kind of music.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Hard rock? Well, first keep in mind that I have lots of guitars, mostly Gibsons and a PRS, so I could just use the strat for some songs and leave the heavy stuff to my other guitars. If I find the right bridge pickup and possibly replace the Fat 50s with noiseless single coil pickups.

For our band, hard rock would be, Metallica, STP, Alice in Chains, Fuel, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden, Smashing Pumpkins, and so on.

I'd like to try out some Fat 50s pickups, so I volunteer to take some of those awful pickups of the hands of unhappy owners.

FWIW

I have the DiMarzio area pickups, they're decent noiseless pickups, but you trade something for the hum cancelling properties. Nevertheless they're much better than SCN's that I had in my Dlx, at least to my ears.

Currently i'm planning on changing them for either:

Fat 50's
Fralin Hot vinatage
one of the EPIC series Kleine pickups (57 or 65) .. they sound pretty good
Bare knuckles Mothers milk.
D.Allen RnB 60's (probably not any more)

Clearly my preference goes with single coils and their crystal clear cleans and vintage quack (RWRP needed) although I have humbucker guitars in the collection... if you don't like single coils and prefer the beefier humbucker sound ..go with that ... Don't waste your time with other single coils, but I would keep the fat 50's in the strat for sometime, so just in case you gravitate to single coils again (each have their uses), you might find them awesome. YMMV at the end!
Cheers
HNS

Over time I have been moving more to the single coil sound, but I have lots of hum issues.
For the strat im using the Dimarzio Area pickup. I went through lots of iterations on which model should go in which position, but the Heavy Blues 2 is great in the bridge.
These are very single coil quacky sounding pickups.

For the Les Paul with P90s I'm using Kinman and I'm so impressed with those I might try his humless strat pickups.

I've never used the Fat 50's, but have been curious because I want to replace the stock pickups in one of my Strats. I just put in a set of 57/62's in a Strat and absolutely love them! They sound best in the neck position, but give great, clear tone when clean.

I know this is a Strat forum so please forgive the Tele intrusion, but I have a set of Fender Noiseless on my Tele and love them. Very clean, twangy, and sound great dirty. The neck is a little more muddy than the bridge so some adjusting on the guitar is needed when switching, but rarely do I need to switch mid-song.

Pickups I've had in the past that I didn't really like were: Seymour Duncan Antiquity, Seymour Duncan Hotrail, Fender Lace Sensor, Fender Custom Shop TX Specials. I do currently have some of the above mentioned presently installed on some of my Strats, but am always buying and selling pups for fun and experimentation. I do not, however, plan to pull out the 57'62's in the Strat or the Noiseless in the Tele.

Two last things to consider: upgrading the pots depending on the output of the pickups, and neck woods. The rosewood worked better with the TX Specials, but the maple worked better for some of the others.

I have both 2011, and 2012 strats. I love the pickups and sound in the 2011 over the 2012 and fat 50's. I'm not a fan of the fat 50's. I see Lollar blackface pickups in the 2012s future. Hopefully that will make it sound better.

Have a safe and happy New Year,
Mike

did a warmoth build and put FFs in it. They sound great but they are very very similar to TS IMO. I have an SRV and aside from the bridge pup the sound very similar.
The bridge pup on the FF is very good. Not shrill at all......

I have had Texas Specials and dont hear the similarities. I thought the Fat 50s has a bit les low end and less shimmer IMO, but it has been a while since I had the Texas Specials. I have a American Standard with an ash body and a 59 thinskin with 50s custom shop pickups in them (ash body) .The 50s custom shop were only previously available in the CS 56 Time Machine NOS. They sound somewhat similar, but the 59 thinskin neck pickup has a nicer quality to it than the Fat 50s one. Dont know what to atribute it to. It could be the wiring , pots , or whatever, but the Thinskin sounds more musical than the Fat 50s.

if you heard them side by side you would hear the similarities for sure. The big dif is the bridge pup. The FF, IMO, is a "nicer" bridge pup. Neck and mid are very close in tone and sound

That's interesting. I do remember the ts bridge being ice pickey. Putting fat 50s in the American Standard was a good move by Fender IMO.
