So am I crazy? All I ever read are stellar reviews of Fat 50s pickups. They are nice but nothing special to me. I am replacing them with Fender Vintage Noiseless, Hot Noiseless or DiMarzio 54 Pros. I am not a single coil fan in general.

Nothing wrong with the Vintage Noiseless pickups, nothing at all.

They're like fifteenth or twentieth on my list of most authentic-sounding Strat pickups.

It is funny how subjective this stuff can be - I just got my Am Std and absolutely love the Fat 50's...meanwhile, some people can't wait to get rid of them.

Whatever sounds good to you. I'm not criticizing your choice to change the pickups in any way, it's just interesting.

Well you have to do what you like and gives you the sound you want but for me the fat 50s blows the 3 you named out of the water.

I'm a Fat 50's convert as well. Ultimately, you have to please yourself. But I will keep my Fat 50's in my American Standard until they die.

They are good, but just sound like every other Fender single coil I have had. I think my 2003 Highway strat had better single coils. I have no complaints, but I do not like the noise. I can't use an OD pedal in front of my amp with the Fat 50s because the noise is too great so they limit me in when I can use them.

This is 2013, I think it is time Fender starts using noiseless single coils in their guitars and concentrate on building a better noiseless pickup.

In the past, Fender has used Lace Sensors, and SCN pickups (designed by Bill Lawrence). They currently have Vintage Noiseless, Hot Noiseless, and N3 noiseless pickups. Some people prefer noiseless pickups, other prefer straight single coils. Take your pick.

I had the same problem, until I ran my OD pedals through the loop of a Boss NS-2. Now I have wonderful organic tone with a minimum of noise.

You have to be happy with your guitar. Do what you feel you need to to make you happy. Lord knows I have spent a good deal of money in pursuit of "tone".

I am also a Fat 50's user. I dropped them into my Highway 1, and I love them. But other Strats I own have other brands and configurations.

If your not a fan of single coils why buy a single coil guitar? Not trying to be smart just curious.

For something different once in a while, especially with clean tones. They are not my favorite but like them for an alternate or to get tones I can't get elsewhere. I also really like noiseless singles/stacked singles (buckers) as they seem to have less quack or less of that authentic single coil sound, smoother, rounder, etc.....but still way, way different sounding than my humbuckers that it is worth it!
So, I may not be a single coil guys, but I love stacked singles/noiseless singles as they are their own beast, not a true single nor a humbucker.

Lets just say this - I now have a 2013 American Standard strat with a stock Fender Black Diamond bridge humbucker and two Fender Hot noiseless pickups and I am loving it! Sounds and feels way different than my Gibsons, even though it is far away from pure strat sounding. :)

Since the discussion is on the pups, tell me what are the main "likes" about the Vintage 50's pups vs. the American Standard I have from 2009? I'm looking a the 2012 American Standard w/ Rosewood in a tri-burst. Have the white/maple in my Am. Standard. If they will sound play much different it's worth having 2 to me especially when on sale. :D

I like Fender Noiseless pickups a lot, I think I prefer them to the Custom Shop 54's for some sounds. As with all pickup discussion - and VN's in particular - if it works for you then that's all that matters.

Also this ...

Well, things just got better! We had rehearsal today and the strat sounded killer. I was shocked at how much I was loving the Fat 50s and also love the bridge Diamondback pickup. Everything seems well balanced.

Little to no noise or hum. Weird?

Very smooth and clean.

Not ure what the heck I was thinking.
