Hendrix and Blackmore - more and above all... that's why I'm such a big fan of the late 60s Strat looks (hey Fender - what about a production line take on the 68-69? say a Classic Player or a Vintage Hot rod? :D ).

SRV should also be mentioned. For a while I wanted to go for a humbucker in the bridge position because I was into Eddie Van Halen and 80s rock. I'm over this period...

This guy should be mentioned I remember when he hit in 1978.
He inspired an army and is single handedly responsible for more strat mods than any other player.

I did play a CS '69 Strat. It was pretty nice, too.

I think part of the porblem is that up until the past 5 years, '67 - '80, for many collectors is considered the worst years for Fender guitars. It is true that back then there was some really terrible guitars being made, but now '70s Strats are the only way a poor guy like me can buy a vintage Strat.

Some of the best Strat music was played on the worst year Strats...

Aesthetics matter, and I see the big headstock as a statement - to me it just represents a darker, quirkier side of the Strat. Think Blackmore, Hendrix, Trower, fast Eddie Clarke, early Gilmour... even Yngwie... it looks like it has some extra 'attitude' and was used in music with a lot of attitude.

when I was a kid my first electric was a LP copy made by Penco. A Japanese makes. I bought it because Page played an LP. As I got older and learned the dif between humbuckers and single coils I came to love the single coil tone/vibe. Stopped playing for a while and then SRV hit the scene in the early 80s. That was it for me...Strat and nothing else now. Then I started to dig in and see all the players I love playing strats. Hendrix, Clapton, Jeff Beck, a multitude of blues players, etc. There are many players I dig who play humbuckers but they aren't my bag baby...:)

Jimi Hendrix fired up my interest in the Strat and finally in 1974 I could afford to go and buy one. After trying out some new models I picked up a well played '65 "L" series Strat and it had the identical tone of the L series Strat that Jimi had used on songs like "The Wind Cries Mary","May This Be Love" and "Are You Experienced" etc from his first album. The soul and passion that Jimi infused into his playing just hit home with me and I was inspired to ramp up my practice time to 8 hrs plus a day and try and become the best I could be.This practice ethic stuck with me for years and is probably partly to blame for the condition my hands are in today as I never did or knew that hand and finger stretches and excercises are very necessary-especially after a particularly lengthy practice session.

Then on my 16 birthday in 1980 I received this... 76 Fender Stratocaster

Beatles -"While my guitar gently weeps" -then I found out later it was Eric Clapton playing Le Paul Gibson
Jimmy Page -"Stairway to Heaven"-then I found out later he played a Telecaster on that song
Eric Clapton -"Hideaway" -then I found out later he played a Gibson also
I also loved Keith Richards" Brown Sugar" guitar sound which I found out later he plugged his acoustic directly into console for that sound?

Stevie Ray was the first I took notice of to the point where I wanted to know what I could about his guitars.. Saw him 10+ times over the years.. and if not for SRV, I'm not sure I would have found Mr. Cray.. By far, my favorite live player since Stevies passing.. Totally different guys, totally different styles, but for the last 20 years there's nobody I'd rather go see live than Robert Cray. I see him every time he's within a couple hours or so.

Other Strat guys I like listening to are:

Gilmour
Knopfler
Rory
