Serial numbers starting with N9 were assigned to a number of 1990 Strats. They should have been on 1999 Strats only. I have one of these 1990 Strats, bought new in 1992.

Can anyone tell me approximately how many 1990 Strats were given an "N9" serial number by mistake?

Are these guitars considered rare, like a misprinted postage stamp or a coin minted with some odd characteristic?

Thanks for any info!

I don't know how many 1990/1991 Fenders wound up with the N9xxxxx numbers; I don't think it was more than about a 3-4 month period (roughly a quarter of the year). As stratele52 says there isn't any rareity to them; it's just another serial anomaly like FMIC using the E4 numbers in 1986-1988 or CBS using the S9 numbers on Strats from 1979-1981 and the S8 numbers on Teles from 1978-1982.

You can't go solely by the S/Ns. Fender uses a set of S/Ns until they run out of recals with those S/ns.

For instance my '04 50th Anniv. Am. Series Strat has an '03 S/N. The EC Strat I ordered directly from the factory (through a music store) in Feb '01, has a 2000 S/N.

For if you buy a Fender instrument with a S/N, you can be certain that it is either on the money or 1 yr out of date.

On a final note, and many people have asked about this, Strats from '87 and '88 had E4 S/Ns (This would indicate an '84 S/N).

Most common are 1990 strats with E9*** serial numbers. But the N9 isnt rare and wouldnt add any value at all if it was.

My Ultra has an E9 serial, and it was made in 1990

Very true; I've never been 100% sure when these "N9xxxxx" decals were mis-used. It could have been very late 1990, early 1991, or it could have crossed over both years.
