I got a marshall Valvestate amp, it sounds pretty rock solid, i like a lot of stuff, classic rock the most and its pretty much ruling the world now, with my strat. I just got a VOX Cambridge amp from ebay im pretty excited, im gettin it soon ill let you know how that goes. Ive played a Blues Jr. at my buddies, that was THE BEST!

I've got the MG10CDR, and that's a nice little solid-state amp. Probably one of the best amps under $200. Perhaps the only thing better would be a Epiphone Valve Jr, 'cuz it's a tube amp. Marshall's FDD feature in the MG series is pretty neat. I didn't like the larger MG amps, though, 'cuz the FX sound like poo.

Specifically, what are you wanting with more wattage, by the way? Beefier sound? More volume? What kind of venue are you looking at? Just to paint a bit of a picture: 100w is about twice as loud as 10w, but the real difference in tone often comes from the speaker. The MG10 only has an 8" speaker. Most performance amps have at least one 12", if not two 12" (Marshall's combos and Fender's twins). A Marshall half stack is four 12" speakers. A full stack is eight 12" speakers.

But here's the problem: 4x12 and 8x12 driven by 100w is almost totally impractical. You can't record with it, 'cuz that level of volumes damages your mics. You can't crank it enough for small club/bar/coffee shop venues, 'cuz the "sweet spot" is just too dang loud. In medium venues, you can get to the sweet spot, but your soundman will be fighting you most of the way. Pretty much they're only good for large venues. A "recording" or "practice" amp with one 12" speaker driven by 5w - 20w is gonna allow you to crank the amp to a nice tone in most situations. And if that's too quiet, you can mic it and give the control over to your soundman.

How are the Cornfords priced? I can't find a site that gives a price range.

They're not cheap, but they're kinda half the price of typical boutique, and they're handwired point-to-point with no PCBs, and not built in the Far East. They sound flippin' fantastic, in my very humble opinion. The way you could put it, what Rivera are to Fender, Cornford are to Marshall.

I think you are in the US, yitty79? Check their website: I count 12 dealers Stateside, under "dealers and links". www.cornfordamps.com

Also. If that is the kind of sound you are into, then do you know about the latest thing: some guys who used to design for Marshall left a couple of years ago and set up Blackstar Amplification. Again, hotrodded Marshall type sounds at far less than boutique prices. And the best drive pedal on the planet! Take a peek: www.blackstaramps.co.uk

Cheers

Yeah... Botique amps... Way too much for my budget. I think that's another reason why I dig the Blackheart amps. I can handle a $450 Class A... $1,700+? Not so much. I think if I had that almost-$2,000 cash for an amp, I'd get Marshall's 50w Vintage Modern combo.

I demo'd a 100w VM a while back. That's a blues-beast of an amp. Like having your head very gently placed in a car-crush and smoothly flattened to pulp. In a nice way, of course.

But nothing yet has replaced my Triple Super Lead in my affections. One of these days I'll bore you all to tears with a hymn to its praises. Not today, luckily.

The VM is very nice. I like the 50w one for the greater headroom. 100w of Marshall is just too much for what I do. I'd never be able to crank it! I was pretty shocked at first by its purple vinyl though. But, really, even that is pretty cool in a way. But really, both class A's and the VM are ideal for my kinda playing in that they're really designed for a less-is-more approach to playing. Forget the pedals and crap, just use a guitar and an amp. I love that sort of thing.

Right now, anyway... I reserve the right to change my mind :D

i thinking of a 12" specer driven by a 20w well around abouts but i want a amp that works well with most pedals nd is good for most kinds of music but for under £250

Yeah, I've read you many times advising people to go for a good, simple tube amp driven from the guitar: a philosophy I'd wholeheartedly endorse. I have a ton of effects and stuff that I sometimes use through my practice amp (an AVT). The difference playing the TSL – or any decent tube amp – is that you seldom want to put anything in front of it. The tone of the amp is all you want to hear.

That’s how you know…

For that price, my friend, you solutions are limited - if you want valves/tubes. Blackheart's Little Giant head and cab package has already been recommended and can be found in the UK for £199. The Little Giant combo, BH5-112, is £189. That's excellent value.

If you prefer a Fender-type sound the Super Champ XD, also already mentioned, can be found for under £200. Unbeatable.

These are good recommendations. Go check 'em out!

I dont know if it's been mentioned yet but here's one for the heap.
Traynor YCV40WR, it's a class A 40 watt tube amp with a 12in celestion vintage 30, I am on my second one cause i messed up and sold my last one.
They are fantastic amps with a lot of power and sweet features.
you can pick up a used one for 350.-400. and worth every penny.

Aside from the basic tube Fenders, another amp I feel is good value for the dollar is the Peavey Classic 30... I tried one and it was very loud and bold indeed!
