I put some seymour duncan antiquity surfers in my strat and they sound great, very balanced, bright yet warm. A lot of it too is your amp. Before I had lindy fralin blues specials in it when i played through a blues jr. but they sounded mediocre (not enough highs) with my ac15.

Ive always been partial to Texas specials, and Seymour Duncan lipstick PU's. The Fat 50's though are probably the most well rounded PU's I've used.

A few days ago, I decided that I was getting rather bored with the EMGs and wanted to go back to the passive route but still wanted that active sound and a friend of mine (who also plays a Stratocaster) suggested that I give Seymour Duncan Distortions a try. He didn't have to twist my arm too much after seeing his band play and hearing how massive and punchy his Strat sounded and my jaw hit the floor. Needless to say, I went out the next day and had those EMGs replaced with a matching set of Distortions installed in my Stratocaster and I couldn't be happier with my tone now! It's punchy and gainy just like the EMGs but with more bottom end and volume overall. And they even sounded great on my Peavey's clean channel as well. I am definitely happy with this transformation!

This is what you are looking for. A Fender HSS Stratocaster.

My 3 Am Std Strats all have Amalfitano SPs in them. Hand wound by a good dude in North Texas.

Lower-output coils seem more touch-sensitive than the balls-out mega-volt pickups which many extol. And with the right OD pedal and a tasty amp, they'll deliver ample "hot" and "fat" if/when the occasion demands.

+1 .... It's low output for me.

I like the Texas Specials, but I really lower them away from the strings. But that works out for me pickingwise! I don't like pickups getting in the way of my picking.

These would help, but you'll find that much of the sound is in the player's hands :D

Too many factors! What kind of sound are looking for? Hot, vintage, single coils, humbuckers, p90s. Amps & gear play a big factor too! Well it comes down to the fingers.
Alot of your tone and ability comes from your fingers. Just saying!
Many Options. Spend endless amounts of money trying different ones. Choice is yours.
Keep Jammin! Enjoy Life!

I use: Lindy Fralin's vintage hots- 60's Strat
: Joe Barden's-Tele,w/Strat pick-ups
: Emg's 60/85-humbucker Strat

I haven't read all (any) of the replies here but hopefully the one thing the OP is getting out of this is that "the best" pickup...or guitar or amp or pedal, etc., is nothing more than subjective at best.

First and foremost, no two people really hear things exactly the same way. It's really the same way as seeing "color"...what may look like Fiesta red to one person may look like Fire Engine red to another! LOL! When it comes to sound, what may sound really sweet to my ears, may sound like complete trash to yours.

Second, when it comes to pickups, the fact of the matter is that in most cases any given brand/model of pickup is likely going to sound different between two different guitars...even from the same maker. Case in point; I have a set of Fender Vintage Noiseless pups that I had gotten a number of years back. When I had first got them, I had put them in my '96 MIM Standard and while they were a far sight better than the stock MIM pickups, they just were NOT the sound I was after with that particular guitar. HOWEVER, I turned around and put them in my '85 Japanese E series and the tone was just absolutely beautiful....and the '96 ended up with a set of Duncan's.

When you combine those two factors, the simple fact of the matter is that there is simply no definitive or quantitative measurement as to how a given pickup really sounds to a given person, in any given guitar. I could be wrong here, but I suspect most of us who are looking for that certain tone, typically have to go thru a few sets of pickups before we really find it. A great many of us get that certain sound in our heads...for me, I've really only heard that "golden tone" twice in my 30+ years of playing...in both cases it came from a mid 80's Japanese E series Strat (one Fender, one Squier...not that there was ANY difference with those) and both had EMG Selects in them! Not the high end EMG's, but the cheap ones...to me -that- is what a Strat should sound like! Also heard an old Kramer once, also loaded with Select's that came close. That said, I have yet to actually pickup a set and slap them in one of my Strats...it's on the "to do" list, just haven't gotten to it yet. Yea, I love my '96 with the Duncans...but she don't really sound like a Strat (if anything she actually sounds more like a Les Paul or an SG than anything else...she's just got more snarl than should be legal for a Strat, LOL!). Yea, I love my little '94 Fender "Squier Series", particularly since I put a set of GFS over wound single coils in her...she's really got that whole Texas Blues sound going on...but again not really a "Strat" sound either. I guess that's one of the reason's I love Strats...because I CAN get so many different sounds out of them...but I have yet to have one that has that golden tone that I hear in my head that really speaks Strat to me.

Yea...most folks think I'm nuts :-)

So with that, my only suggestion here is to really play as many guitars as you can until you really find the sound that you're looking for and either buy that guitar or simply find out what pickups are in it and see if they work in yours.

Just my $.02 worth,
Jim

Bare Knuckle make some excellent Strat pickups, as do The Creamery. I've sworn never to buy any more Seymour Duncans, to me they sound too sterile and lacking in character. Same with EMG's but with double the sterility.

As I said...what sounds great to one person, sounds like crap to another. There is no right or wrong here, it's all nothing more than highly subjective personal opinion at best.

It really is as simple as that.

Guess I'm late to this thread but just returned from holiday; the Fender Custom Shop Fat '50s that came loaded in my strat are near incomparable. Can't really imagine that an indie pickup manufacturer could do much better, frankly.
:D

Just pickup a set of these...
