So you just discribed some stuff that conflicts with itself. You really can't get "fat" and "bright" at the same time.

It really all depends on a few factors.
1. Your guitar's body and neck materials. (Rose wood is warmer than maple. Ash, Alder and mahogany all sound different.)
2. What sound are you looking for? (Do you want an SRV, EC, Eric Johnson, Buddy Guy sound or someone else?)
3. What style of music are you playing?
4. What kind of amo do you use?
5. What guage strings do you use?
6. What materials are your bridge, saddles and nut made from?
7. How do you play? (are you heavy handed?)

I own several different types of pups for different guitars. I personnally like the older EC Strat setup (Lace Sensors w/ the mid-range boost).
I also have a heavy Strat with Texas Spc.
Don't forget that you can do a lot just by doing the following:
1. Turn the tone knobs on your guitar and amp.
2. Chang out the capasitors (believe it or not, changing the caps will make a really big difference.)

My best advice for you would be for you to play a bunch of different guitars with different pups.

He needs pickups for a Red Strat.

If you short on $ try the Tex-Mex Pups. Bright and bottom ended. You will need to lower them more than Fender recommends to make them sound smooth.

Texas Specials are hot and articulate. Have them on my Vintage Ash Blonde FSR. They rock!

The Lindy Fralin web site has a simple but interesting little chart in their Strat pups area that seems to indicate how hotter pups can be darker sounding than lower output pups. Make no mistake, the folks at Lindy Fralin know a thing or two about Strat pups. Higher output levels are often considered by many to be an important factor of a pup's percieved "fatness". The info on the Kinman web site with regard to their Hx85 pretty much alludes to this idea. I pretty much disagree with that assumption but I'll leave it to others to decide for themselves. These kinds of issues are usually quite subjective as are almost all discussion of tone.

On a personal note, after spending a couple of decades searching for hotter and fatter pups the light eventually came on in my stubborn old noggin and I began to value lower output pups for a number of reasons not the least of which is expressiveness and dynamic response. There are a few, not many I admit but a few artist who seem to understand this. Slash is one. Listening to his guitar tone one might expect he runs very hot pups in his Les Pauls but that is not actually the case.

Just throwing that out there.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

+1

Lower-output coils seem more touch-sensitive than the balls-out mega-volt pickups which many extol. And with the right OD pedal and a tasty amp, they'll deliver ample "hot" and "fat" if/when the occasion demands.

I like the hot noiseless ones that Fender do.
That said, I tend to lower the pickups too, as I find that too close a proximity to the strings can inhibit string vibration to a small degree.

I also like the noiseless ones on the Clapton model.

I know I am probably going get raked over the coals for this one but for my personal tastes and style of music that I play, I prefer the EMG 81(bridge)/85(neck) for my Blacktop Strat HH with two volumes and one tone and a 3-way selector toggle switch. Granted, a lot of people choose this combination already but you really don't see it that often in Stratocasters. I just love it. It's perfect for what I do.

Everyones Ears are different. You may need to go to a guitar store, and play the heck out of every strat that may have different pickups in them, then go to Seymour Duncan, Fralin, etc and listen to their sound clips. My preference? Dimarzio Area series. 61 in the bridge set high, and 58's in middle and neck at mid. 8)
