I'm not a big fan The Smashing Pumpkins but my quest for the rare and elusive hard tail Strat has led me to the Billy Corgan MIA signature model.

I was very much surprised and happily so that contrary to my preconceived notion, this guitar does indeed sound like a Strat. So much for preconceptions. I'm not all that crazy about the mat finish but I love the feel, how the guitar plays, and of course the sound. The rhetorical question, should I pull the trigger on the one that's been hanging on my friendly neighborhood Fender dealer's wall for some time now ($1,300) or keep saving for that CS '65 ($3,600) which has been there just as long. 8)

Although I don't buy guitars with the intention of making an investment or selling later for a profit, do you think the fact that this model is discontinued would have any effect on its resale value?

Thanks & Cheers!
BM

Buy what you want/need based on your playing requirements, not on some nebulous proposition that a Billy Corgan will be worth the price of a new Lexus LS450 twenty or thirty years from now. Speculation such as that is a fool's errand.

I agree with you, Arjay, and as I mentioned "I don't buy guitars with the intention of making an investment or selling later for a profit". I was just curious if the model being discontinued could have any effect on resale value.

    ... Maybe subconsciously ...
I was also looking for a viable justification when my darling wife asks me why I need another Strat.

    Cheers!

I would keep saving for the CS. I think there was little demand in the Corgan Strat, at least in my part of the world anyway. To me, 3 rails config aren't really that desirable. Mostly people will just opt for one in the bridge, or bridge + neck.

You can get that kind of tone with any Strat: just drop in the same pickups into your pickguard.. That is if you don't want his signature on the headstock. Apart from the hardtail- what else is different?

Ultimately, it's up to you. But yeah- when I saw the Corgan Strat come out, I wondered what all the fuss was about since the smashing pumpkins are so 1995 and not since. I'd much rather a CS Strat myself ;)

IMHO.

Good advice, Blertles. However that CS-65 I've been lusting over may be a long, long, time coming. Then again the same is looking true for the FSR Forum Guitar but that's another thread. :)

As I've already mentioned, I'm not a big fan of the Smashing Pumpkins and I'm even less a fan of signature models, so the name on the back of the head stock is not part of equation. What appeals to me is the hard tail, how this instrument feels, how it plays, and how the sound is 100% Strat yet at the same time unique among Strats.

... And as Arjay said: "We all need another Strat."

    Cheers!

Take a good look at the Robert Cray signature Strat.

Actually I played the Robert Cray a couple of months ago - the MIM model, not the CS - and recall liking the guitar but finding the pups too noisy. Then again I also said that the Corgan Strat "isn't my cup of tea" and now I'm thinking of adding it to my collection. Hmm... What is that they say about first impressions? 8)

Perhaps I should revisit the RC and spend some quality time.

Arjah, did you put the SCN's on your RC build because you didn't like the stock pups or was there another reason?

    Cheers!

I wanted the SCN's with S1 switching, both for the noise-free operation and maximum sonic flexibility. Using the "humbucking" configuration (with the S1 button depressed) the guitar does a pretty fair approximation of a Gibson with Classic 57's. And with the pickup height carefully optimized (the neck coil is particularly critical), it delivers the requisite spank of a traditional Strat.

This afternoon I revisited the Robert Cray (MIM) and now believe that the noise I was hearing when I played it two months ago may have had more to do with the mains circuit than the guitar. Original thread: Robert Cray vs. Robert Cray

Today I played through a FSR Princeton Reverb in the same room as before and there was the same noise. I played an American Standard through the same amp and there no noise so I assumed, once again, that the RC pups were the culprits. Not willing to give up on the guitar because I really do like the feel and the tone, I asked to play it through a HRD which was in another room. Guess what. No noise. Is it the amp? Is it the mains? Is it the pups? A combination of some or all of the above?

Anyhow, thanks to Arjay and tbazzone for steering me back the RC. I think I'm liking even more than the BC.

Cheers!

Corgan strat is awesome. lzozlozzz you are setting yourself up for discouragement by asking the old folks here. They hate Corgan and Smashing Pumpkins and that clouds their judgment when they attempt to comment on this guitar.

jumbo frets is another thing...it's a pro guitar that he still uses on tour right now

LOL recommending a mexican strat to you./

go with your heart

you heard the corgan in action... it is amazing
