3 years ago when I bought my Jimmie Vaughn Strat I didn't mind the V-neck too much and even though it was the first one that I had played-let alone bought-I got used to it in a short while.Lately though because of the worsening condition of my hands, the neck causes a great deal of premature hand fatigue and pain, just after a very short time playing.I was wondering if I could sand down the V either a little or even better all together so that I can play it as long as I can my other Strats.I'm not afraid of messing it up because I am well used to all manner of hand-held and stationary commercial belt sanders. What has me concerned is whether or not there is enough wood between the skunk stripe and surrounding area to sand it down without getting into the truss rod pocket.

I am also a quite hesitant about doing this because Jimmie Vaughn had actually played my guitar when it was part of an exhibit of a Fender promotion that had gone across Canada in 2010-that's a long story which I won't get into now.

Anyway the guitar's provenance is also part of what's making me so apprehensive too, but the main issue is if there is enough wood to allow making the contour of the neck a C or D rounded one.

I was also wondering if it would be better if Ijust removed the neck and put on a Fender sanctioned neck-that's an absolute must- and if there are any available for the MIM artist guitars such as the J.V. and from whom. The last time I bought a neck was back in the early 80s and that was for a handmade walnut neck from Double Eagle Guitars in Toronto ( now defunct) and that was about $180 at the time.Does anyone know who makes Fender approved or endorsed necks and the approximate costs?I think that would be the best way to go,come to think of it.

If you want an original Fender neck, buy it here:

http://stores.ebay.com/The-STRATosphere ... =105525814

Note that they are a "chop shop" and are not an authorized Fender dealer.

Or buy a Fender licensed neck from Warmoth, All Parts, or many other dealers. These are not actual Fender necks but are licensed by Fender and made by a third party.

I wouldn't do. I would do as bill suggested and get another neck. I also have a JV and do enjoy it.

I agree, find a new neck. I've seen new mim necks from the stratosphere for 180-225 dollar range. New in the sense they came from unplayed new Fender guitars.

That's great info-thanks guys-I'll certainly look into these places and just set the neck aside until the old mitts get back to new condition.I'd prefer a neck with the same profile as the "L" series Strats as they are the most comfortable I have ever played.

The only time the soft V neck on my Clapton bothers me is if I'm playing a lot of bar chords. I don't play thumb over, and my thumb will start to tire after a lot of chording. For lead work I like the feel of the neck. A replacement neck sounds like a good choice for your problem

What about flattening out the radius a little? I find the Necks with a flatter radius are a bit easier to play.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

The problem is most likely because the neck is thin, thinning it out more, or flattening the radius will make it worse, not better.

You might consider just selling or trading your Jimmie Vaughan Strat in stock condition and getting another Strat more to your liking.

I wouldn't get rid of the J.V. because when I bought it I had tried it out with 9 or 10 other Strats and even though I had allowed myself a ceiling price of $3,000 the J.V. was the one that spoke to me,the sound is just so much like the "L" series Strats that I doubt that I'd find anything that comes close to it.That plus the fact that Jimmie Vaughn himself had played that very guitar makes selling it a no-go.

Hi Nik,I don't think that the neck is too thin because the neck on my old '65 is quite shallow and thin yet I can play it longer than most all of my guitars except for my John Lennon 1965 Casino and my '63 and '65 Hagstroms. It's definitely the V that is causing the problem because when I do barre chords the pain in my hands goes right off the chart.A neck replacement neck is pretty well a given now,I just hope that I can find an "L" series type B neck with a shallow D profile such as my '65 has.Cheers.
