I am interested in the new classic series 60's strat. Unlike the AVRI series and thin-skin models, the new 60's classic series has a poly coat under the nitro. The draw for me to the guitar is the nitro finish.

But, if there is a poly layer under the nitro, is the nitro finish any better than the urethane finish of the standard American strats? And, will there be any difference in how is wears over time? Would there be any truly significant differences between the nitro and urethane if they both have a poly undercoat? And, is the poly undercoat true to the painting scheme in the original 60's strats?

Thanks

I think the properties of the poly undercoat are quite similar in most respects to the Fullerplast that Fender used in the '50s and '60s. The lacquer top coat should age gracefully, just as with the finishes applied to vintage instruments.

Hmmm -- I typed a long reply about how Fender has been using polyester sealers/base coats since the '50s but when I try to post it I get the "sorry, we're experiencing techinal difficulties" page.

Perhaps there's a filter that objects to Sherwin-Williams "Homoclad"?

edit -- no, apparently not a filter problem.

Before Fullerplast they used a polyester called Homoclad. Other than a few rare screw-ups when they skipped the base sealer coat, Fender has always used some type of poly base sealer coat. The Thin-Skins were inspired by those rare mistakes -- they weren't meant to accurately represent normal production-line '50s/'60s Fenders. (The Custom Shop Time Machine models had actual Homoclad/Fullerplast base coats -- those sealer products are still available in slightly modernized formulations.)

Anyway, the older AVRI's had poly basecoats with nitro color coats and nitro clear top coats -- the new MIM Classics should age/wear exactly the same way the older AVRI's did.

Happy Early Birthday AL! As for these finishes, I like a nice vintage fade happening on a two tone sunburst, but when it comes to colors like CAR or LPB...I would prefer the color not get that yellow fade to it, especially on LPB so it gets that green look to it. I like my CAR and LPB to be as pretty as the day I buy it.

FWIW

Hadn't thought of that. I have a 2004 Am Std candy cola, love it, really love this CAR 50's classic, wonder how much the yellowing would effect it, may turn a kind of orange afer a while. Just love the feel of my surf green CS 50's, and really love the CAR. retail at 899.00. I do however have a 15% off at GC coupon!

I don't think a yellowing topcoat would affect CAR too much.. More so affects Blue and greens, silver and obviously white. Possibly a slight variation however CAR should age very gracefully :)

That's right. In fact, Fender have always used one or another plastic based sealer coat beneath their nitro on factory guitars (except maybe on certain "thin skin" special orders for a certain retailer or two).

I know someone's going to want to argue over that - at which point I'll dig out Mark Kendrick's long and crucial post on Fender's finishing process. Mark is a Fender Master Builder who started out in the paint department. He knows his stuff.

A-a-anyway. Personally I couldn't care less about nitro, for or against. But I do think offering it on their MIM Classics is a great development for those who do like cellulose on a guitar body. Nuttin' wrong with more choices over that sort of thing.

Cheers - C

Thank you all for the input. I played the non-nitro model in the store and loved. The nitro-version just released from backorder. I ordered one.
