I'm considering a purchase of a sweet (used) honey blond Deluxe Players Strat that I found at a local shop. I'm not sold on the VN pickups however, and I see on the Fender site that VN's are installed with specific pots, caps & resistors. Do I need to replace ALL of those specific components if I replace the VN's with say, some pups from the Fender custom shop?

Well, you probably wouldn't "need" to, but if you wanted wire the guitar more like a traditional Strat, you'd probably want to go with the standard 250K pot values and standard tone capacitor.

+1

However, "standard" tone cap values can vary based on a number of distinct parameters (type of pickup, type of amp, type and number of effects on one's pedal board, etc). For traditional single-coils though, the 250K volume and tone pots are preferred.

Thanks for the information. I'll examine my options and see which would work best for me, in both a practical and financial sense. Hopefully I'll have a NGD in my near future!

The honey-blonde-over-ash body with the gold bling is particularly striking.

Good luck and good hunting.

Could you please include a link to where you found this? Wasn't aware that pots etc. in VN equipped guitars are different from what is usually installed, would like to get the details.

I've got one of those DP Strats. I'd suggest giving the VN PUP's a whirl befoer you consider replacing em. YMMV

From the Fender site: Single coil tone without the hum! Vintage Noiseless Strat® pickups produce the brilliant clarity, definition, and harmonic attributes of a vintage Strat in a noiseless package. These pickups feature special beveled edge Alnico 2 magnets and enamel-coated magnet wire. Includes all mounting hardware. For optimum performance there is a wiring kit available that includes specific pots, caps and resistors. Fender part number 0992115555.

I think it is safe to assume that if there is a wiring kit available for VN pups, then Fender would include that kit in guitars that come with factory installed VN's.

And I wasn't impressed with the low output of the VN's compared to other Strats that I have played. I used to use Lace Sensors for years, mainly to avoid the noise of standard single coils. A few years back I had an epiphany, and discovered the organic bliss of "real" single coils. Now I use a Boss NS-2 in my pedalboard, it gates the front end a bit and I run my OD pedals through the NS-2 loop, cleans'em up real good.

I believe any noiseless SC pickup sacrifices some amount of tone in the quest for quiet. I'd rather not make that sacrifice. And anyway, I'm kicking around the idea of having a HSS Strat.... maybe a Deluxe Player with Lonestar pups??

I prefer DiMarzio's Virtual Vintage line of pickups over any noiseless types offered by Fender. They sound "strattier", have significantly more "beef", and they use standard 250K volume and tone pots.

I recently purchased a used Fender Deluxe Players Strat (honey blonde with a maple neck....sweetness 8) ) with Lace Sensor Pickups installed. Emerald (Neck), Silver (Mid) and Purple (Bridge). But the Push Switch that comes with the stock pickups is not connected, so its a dead switch for now. I pretty stoked about the sound with these pickups, other than the push switch is not connected.

Good luck!!
