I haven't found an answer for this question so I'm asking it here (If there is a thread with the answer, link me to it). I have a 2012 Mexican-Made Fender HSS Stratocaster with a tremolo. Everything on it is stock. I love the sound of it but the Humbucker (Bridge position) just seems really weak. How will an open-cover Gibson 498t Humbucker sound in a strat? The guitar has no coil-tap. It's just got the standard 5-Way and 1 Volume, 2 Tone setup. Any answers will be super greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome.

It will make your Strat sound like an SG.

I dont think any strat can actually sound like an SG because its not 24 3/4" scale set neck mahogany guitar.
The 498t is an awesome pickup its about my favorite Gibson I just installed one in my 2012 Gibson Les Paul Custom Classic.
It came with a 57 Classic not a plus in the bridge so I replaced it.
It could be compared to the Fender Atomic as I just put that in My American Fender Deluxe.
Its also slightly close to a Seymour Duncan JB, each pickup is slightly different in EQ but about the same output and Alnico 5 magnets.

To simply answer your question it will sound very good and beefy I know because I just put a 498t in another guys Mexican strat.
A strat sounds like a strat but it will energize it for sure.

Donny....do your guitars ever get a chance to get used to their pickups before you swap 'em out on 'em again?

It used to be a joke at the studio did you change the pickup again?

I did spend alot of money on pickups and I used to work at a local music store where I got tons of free ones.
I was one of the service guys at a guitar shop part time but Musicians Friend moved into town.
The Clearance Center killed a lot of Mom and Pop shops here.

I do change them alot and do a lot of installs for friends.
I have settled in my strats (pretty much) ;)
My new Les Pauls came with 57 Classic 57 Classic Plus but last years Custom Classic came with just 2 57 Classics.
So I traded a guy on the Gibson boards for a Factory 498t because Customs ran those.
I think Im gonna keep what I got for now though :)

One thing is for sure I got alot of experience in the pickup dept so I can tell ya about a few of them.
Someone should benefit from my wasted life's savings lol

I'd look elsewhere. The 498's upper mids won't really do much for the low end on your strat. Tonezones whack up the low mid which can cause you to use drastic amp eq settings. But if you're not scared to do that, it's a massive sound that works in a Strat.
Other than that the low end on the Duncan Invader and Dimebucker models is massive.

If you're lucky, you may be able to find a Matsumoko MMK45. They don't sell for much and sound great.

I have a 498T in one of my Highway One's and I love it!!
It's got a nice classic rock sound to it!
I have it coupled up with 2 Fender Vintage Noiseless pickups.
With some careful pickup adjustments there will be no great volume jump when going from singles to humbucker.
It's one of the better pickup choices I've made for my Strats...

Thanks for all the replies. :)

I'm definitely considering adding a 498t to my strat. One last question though - has anyone ever put a Burstbucker in a strat? How did it sound? I really like the sound of both of those pups, but I feel like the Burstbucker 2 has a bit more mid-range and just sounds hotter and beefier than the 498. I might just be crazy, but it seems like a cool idea to me. I love the tone of the Gibson SG Supreme (with 2 burstbuckers, BB2 for bridge, BB3 for neck) but god knows where to find one of those nowadays. Plus, I'm working on this strat as my current project. Thanks.

Got Burstbucker Pro's in my black strat that I gave away :?

Truth be told, I think they're pretty bad pickups. Of no use for anything except that horrible generic blues sound, as are all the other PAF derivatives. Boring things.
