Hello All,
I have a 2006/2007 MIM Strat with a maple neck that is in need of a re-fret. I have absolutely no plans of ever getting rid of her, my first guitar, my only guitar and my wife gave her to me! Overall she's in pretty good shape. She has Seymour Duncan SSL-5 pups that were already installed when she was purchased used, no one seemed to know, even GC based on the price. There are a few guitar techs around town that have good reputations, however you never seem to know for sure. I don't gig or anything close, just play at home and try to not annoy my wife, too much.
Anyway can anyone recommend someone they would trust repair their most favorite guitar in Phoenix AZ area? Seeing as I try to play rock and blues I am thinking about going with 6105 frets. I've been told that these would be good since I seem to like to bend a lot. I assume I am going to have to adjust how I play with the higher frets than what currently exists on her now. I am assuming I will need to learn how to use less pressure instead of the death grip I seem to use now. Also while I am at it should I have a bone nut installed? Again I have no intention of selling her and know that these repairs may be overkill for this particular guitar.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

i had them cut a neck for me to install a Wilkinson Rollernut and they did a good job.

I used to go to Guitar Electronics if I ever needed any fretwork done, it's in the metro area off of Dunlap, but I think they just do amp repair now.

Seven year old guitar needing a re-fret??? What have you been doing to it?

Wouldn't a level and crown do?

The need for re-fretting was a shock to me as well. I failed to mention that I am getting fret buzz, through the amp, when doing any standard or power cords using the 2nd through 5th or 6th frets. From what I can tell, someone may have done some fret refinishing on the first 8 to 10 frets. The low side of the 15th and on frets (E, A and D strings) are hardly worn. I do a lot of bending on the G, B, and E stings from the 9th through the 17th frets so they are also showing wear. In order to level them all out to the same height is going make all of them pretty low. As a result it seems if I had a leveling and re-crown done, I would still need a re-fret in the not too distant future anyway. So consequently that is why I am considering going to 6105 size frets. I have been told that 6105 frets would be a good choice for blues and classic rock that I try to play.
Also if I go ahead and have her re-fretted should I bite the bullet and have a better nut (than the MIM standard equipment) installed at the same time?
Thanks

If you have a nut issue, by all means have it replaced with a new bone or corian type.

Thanks Arjay, while I don't think my fret buzz problem is related to the nut, I am wondering if I have the frets replaced, would it be wise to go ahead and have the synthetic nut replaced at the same time? Is it possible that replacing the nut with a better quality one would change the overall sound and stability of the guitar, which is currently great? Right now I can play all night and she stays in tune and if I pick her up a couple of days later she is still pretty much in tune. Am I over thinking the issue and should I just leave things alone? If it ain't broke don't fix it?
Thanks

If the playability is "great" as you indicate, there's likely nothing wrong with the nut. You might inspect it carefully for burrs or slotting problems when you reassemble the guitar after the re-fret......any issues you find can be dealt with at that time.
