http://www.mk-guitar.com. Ingo mentioned it on Facebook.

Hi David: I like Ingo - he seems like a fun guy and sure knows a heck of a lot about all things Knopfler. Mind you, it can sometimes be hard work finding what you're looking for on his website; I've a feeling it could be better organised. It took me ages to locate the bit about the MK Sig discontinuation - and I'm not sure we're any the wiser for it!

BTW: for Knopflerologists, one interesting thing I did come across a couple of years ago on that website is this:

http://www.mk-guitar.com/2009/12/15/sen ... ar-hero-5/

Ingo claims that is the original lead guitar track from Sultans of Swing. If so, it doesn't help clear up the debate about whether Knopfler used an Orange Squeezer on the number, but it sure shows that he used a truckload of chorus, which can be hard to hear on the finished recording. That's something people have been arguing about for a lo-o-o-ong time...

And it's fascinating to be able to really hear all the clicks, scratches and grace notes in Knopfler's playing, underneath the production. Good stuff.

Cheers - C

Ingo is a valid source, that's true.

So ... nobody here to confirm the rumour? No more MK Signature Strats would be a loss.

Cheers

David

+1

Knopfler's is one of the few signature Strats that I could buy and resist the urge to tear it apart in order to build something else out of it.

To hear that is an amazing and enlightening experience. What a virtuoso.

After 10 years of production, Fender discontinued the Mark Knopfler Signature Strat. From what I heard, Mark and Fender could not agree on the amount of royalties.

Does anybody have information about this?

Can someone from Fender confirm this rumour? No more MK-Signature Strats?

Greetings

He still has an endorsement with Rudy Pensa and recently got an endorsement deal with Don Grosh.

Mark owned 2 strats, he used both until late 1980. Both had Rosewood boards, but he had one changed to maple by Sam Lee. The fret board was planed so flat it was almost unplayable. Parts of the strat were Japanese, maybe all of it. The other strat was a 1961 in natural finish, Mark painted it red, it had a Dimazio in the neck, later around 2000 it was properly refinished in hot rod red because it had cracked. Mark didn't want his sig to be a copy of his 61, he wanted the look of it but Mark hates small frets, he calls them nasty, so they used Medium Jumbo. The ash was used because over the years the alder had dried out making it very light, the light ash weighs about the same, new alder would be heavier. Mark tried every pickup that Fender makes and chose Texas Specials, harsher than his original but Mark wasn't looking to copy the sound of his 1961 strat, he was looking for pickups that suited what he was doing NOW. His own MK sig review strat that I saw didn't have Texas specials in but it might have been one that still had other pickups in that he was trying. I don't associate Mark with Fender strats, I associate him with Schecter strats, the Pensa Suhr and Les Pauls.

Though this guitar initially sported a transitional decal, later production runs were featured with early 1960s "spaghetti"-style logos.

It's true after a nice decade run. The guitar is gone. I have personally owned 4 of them. I never bought the guitar because of the Artist name. I bought it because it was the only Fender Strat. that had all the features I wanted. 62' Ash body, '62 C neck with Rosewood Fretboard, medium jumbo frets, 3 ply pick guard, and of course Texas Special Pickups. I'm glad I got one of the last of these fantastic Strat's.. I finally came to the conclusion that it was indeed the best Fender guitar for me. Besides I really hate selling and buying the same guitar twice (or more).... Doh!!!

I got Fender to give me some of the data from their old Mark Knopfler web page and I posted it on my site. http://www.thebrownsrock.com/mark_knopfler_1.html

Actually, Mark owned two red Fender Strats before he switched to the Schecters, and favoured them at different times during touring and recording. One had a rosewood fretboard, the other a maple cap.

Story goes that he had John Suhr work on the maple one around his Schecter period and found out it wasn't a completely genuine Fender, and he never seemed to use it after that time. He still used the rosewood neck one in studio on the On Every Street album, and most of his solo albums since. It was that one which was the basis for the signature guitar, not the maple one. He still records and tours with the original often.

In other words, the rosewood one was actually a far more relevant Strat to Mark and his music than the maple one, it's just that he happened to use the maple one for those early video clips.
