After 10 years of production, Fender discontinued the Mark Knopfler Signature Strat. From what I heard, Mark and Fender could not agree on the amount of royalties.

Does anybody have information about this?

Cheers

David

Hi David: news to me. Sounds like you know more than the rest of us. Where did you hear about that, please?

Cheers - C

I never understood the sense of that guitar in the first place. Nor where its specs fit into the picture of Knopfler's stage guitar history. His strat-type guitar was known not to be a Fender and Rudy Pensa's gotten a lot of mileage out of his association with Mark and the Pensa-Suhr MK1 which I personally associate with Knopfler over the years.[www.pensaguitars.com].Les Pauls are a part of his arsenal as well. He is known to be very particular about selecting a specific guitar and voicing for the songs he composes. Having lived and worked in NYC, I've enjoyed visiting both of Rudy's locations [48th Street, and Soho] often. If I wanted to own a guitar as a nod to Mark, it'd be MK1 and a Les Paul.

I actually associate his "strat" days with a maple fingerboard.

At least pre-shecter (sp) then to Suhr.

He also used a beautiful red Tele. Then there is the National, Danelectro, Gibsons. whatever fits the Song.

I have heard that Mark Knopfler almost made a point of using a myriad of different guitars on stage... as if the brand and model of whatever guitar he was playing was totally irrelevant to the song or his playing.

The relevance is attributable to the 'voice' that particular instrument contributes to the whole of the piece he's written or performs, independent of brand or model. Emmy Lou Harris spoke to that on an interview done during the tour they did together. I recall reading an interview wherein he states that the construct of his guitar runs, fills, and solos, are an integral part of the piece, and are given careful consideration in their development and rendering.

He has an incredible talent for matching the instrument with the song. Or, the song with the instrument.

Thanks for these. We're seeing both rosewood and maple on those red Strats. Apparently rosewood won out when the specs were developed for the Signature Series. We have to take it on faith, I suppose, that Knopfler had the final word on those and signed off on them.

The only Pensa Knopfler uses nowadays is an MK2 Plus.

Image

This guitar differs from the regular MK2 for the addition of a bound body/fingerboard. It also comes with a variety of pickup configurations, the most common being HSS, HH and HHH (Mark uses the SSS version).

The MK1 with its EMG pickups and Floyd Rose tremolo was used extensively between 1987 and 1992.

I saw in a doco that the signature Strat is a nod to a red strat that sat in a music store he aspired to own as a kid. He eventually bought it but I don't know whether he kept it or not..

The MK signature is a "snapshot" of the fiesta red 1961 Strat he used during the early days of the band.

Image

The original red Strat had a maple-cap fingerboard as opposed to the actual Artist Series guitar which sports a rosewood neck.

Check the products section. The MK guitar has a rosewood board.

All the relevant specs on this can be found on the Pensa website. I'm preferential to the original design with a non-trem bridge. But without a Clapton neck carve, I passed. Last time I spoke to Rudy about that it was not a thing which could happen.

I understand the reasons for which the rosewood fretboard was chosen for the MK signature series.

The guitar in in question came initially with a separate laminated maple fretboard. Mark supposedly put a rosewood neck on it shortly after.

If you watch the Sultans of Swing video you'll notice this guitar sporting a maple-cap neck.
