Hi everybody! I'm a newbie here, so I hope this topic is appropriate to where I have posted it!

I need a little help on a matter which I don't seem to be getting anywhere with. Over xmas last year, I treated myself to a Japanese Strat from the eighties and paid a pretty penny for it. I was told it was worth much more than I paid for it, however like a idiot I didn't research the guitar fully, as I didn't have the chance to.

Basically, I'm trying to get around to selling it in favour of a Jaguar or something like that and I have just been told by a guitar shop, locally, that it is only worth about £300?! Obviously I'm a little miffed because I feel I may have been ripped off, however before I go accusing anyone of anything, I figured I should do some research.

I have the serial number, which should be a start: 'E552143' but the info that generates is very vague. I wondered if anyone could help with this little matter?

Thanks! :)

Welcome to the forum. From the serial number we can't always give you much info...but if you post some pics of your guitar. The headstock, front, back, bridge, and if possible, underside of pickguard, we might be able to give you some info and possible a price.

Hey T2 - thanks for getting back to me so swiftly.

I've created a gallery of the pictures I am able to take.

You can have a look here :http://imgur.com/a/luLKh

I hope this is okay and might shed some light as to the origin of the guitar.

Thanks :)

Hi ellie987,

Keep in mind that a guitar shop usually can not give you as much as the guitar is worth, they have to make money if they resell it. I'm sure you could do much better if you sell it on your own on eBay or Craigslist

Nice looking guitar! :)

Hi shimmilou,

yes I am aware that is the case with guitar shops, which is a bummer but never mind! The thing is I was lead to believe the guitar was special In some way, hence the price I paid for it.

However the guitar shop I spoke to, have similar guitars for sale for that low price of about £300. I paid £750 for this guitar and whilst I love it to pieces, I'm a little concerned I may have been ripped off.

I just want to avoid the same happening again! :)

Hi Ellie, try a different shop.
3 Bolt, 30 year old Japanese, Arctic White Strat in decent nick and an absolute Hendrix/Blackmore vibe about it. A guitar from the time that Japan was the only thing keeping Fender afloat.

£500 of anyones money. Any less is an insult and should be treated as such.

£300 is a cheeky lowball offer. Where did you pay £750 for it? I think that was a little on the high side, but not by much.

Well I paid £750 to my Dad's friend, a multimillionaire, so I didn't really think I was getting ripped off, given the fact he's loaded. However, I can see now how he might have made his money!

I can live with the fact I might have paid a little over the odds for it. Just not how little the shops think its worth. More than anything though, I'd just like to find out the history of the guitar, just in case I might wish to sell it on.

I was told the guitar was from the 70's originally - then found out it was the mid 80's. It came with what looks to me like a plush hard case and was told that was the original case too. However now I'm wondering whether that is original also...I was asked by the guy in the shop whether it is an original Fender case, although I have no way of finding out.

I guess this is humble pie for not having done my research and I'll hold my hands up to that! I'm just trying to piece it all together, so I can be as honest as I can when I go to sell it on!

I'd say £750 is ballpark.
Those guitars never come up for sale. You get Tokai and Antoria guitars approaching that kind of money. An 82 Goldstar Sound in good nick sells for around £600.
I'd say your dads friend didn't do you a favour but how did he become a millionaire in the first place. I wouldn't say he ripped you off.

Shops don't like to take used lefties in. They can sit on the shelf for a year and have 3 people show minor interest with no view to buy. However from new, lefthanded models sell for more than right handed models.
I think you'd be better off to sell to a specialist shop dealing either with vintage Japanese instruments or left handed instruments.
