Just got my first Stratocaster my first Fender guitar ever and was curious about the back plate. Do most of you remove it or leave it on?

You can take it off and play it with no harm to the guitar, just be careful of the ground wire soldered back there and of the springs. I'm just cautious of them snagging on my belt. It'll make your guitar much louder when played unplugged, but doesn't affect your tone when run through the amp.

Edit: pics or it didn't happen!

I always leave mine on. I hate it when I'm looking at nice used Strats and those covers are almost always missing.

Ha! I'll try too get some pics soon. I've read that taking the back plate off changes the tone but I tried it and didn't make a difference so I was interested in knowing if it did for anyone else. Now I know. :D

A backplate is useful to hide discreetly a 9V battery.

I like the bridge decked on most of my Strats, so I leave mine off to make changing strings easier because with the decked bridge the opening(s) in the plate doesn't line up with the block holes, so I would have to take it off anyway to change strings. It took a while for me to get used to the idea, but I realized that no one else sees the back of my guitars, so convenience won out over looks. For my newest Am Std, I keep it on because I have the bridge floating for palm vibrato, and since the holes line up, no need to remove it.

I always keep mine on. I mean, it's not that hard to remove it when necessary.

Isn't that a Clapton Strat?

I leave mine on, not only because it belongs there but it is a bit more pleasing to the eye than a fulcrum assembly is (although some mechanical engineers among us may beg to differ). Also, if the block is set properly, the plate is not an impediment when restringing.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.
