This is an odd one, serial number US10116148. HSS in Brown Sunburst. Why the different numbering system?

It's not odd; Fender started using that system in 2010. Don't use the other guitar dater sites; they haven't been updated in years. Here's the link to Fender's product dating site - it's under the "Support" tab at the top of the page; just go to the "U.S. Instruments Product Dating" and you'll get all the details - here's a link:

http://www.fender.com/support/articles/ ... uct-dating

Long story short Fender changed their USA serial number system at the start of 2010; for about 3 months or so they just used a number that started with a "10" followed by 6 digits. Circa March/April they changed to using a "US10" prefix followed by 6 digits. So you're guitar with a "US10xxxxxx" serial number Fender would have been made some time between say April 2010 and March 2011, when they switched over to numbers that start with a "US11". Also as of 2010 there are no more "special" serial numbers - this format is used on American Standards, American Deluxes, American Specials, Highway 1s, and USA-built Artist models (except the Eric Johnson which has a number stamped on the neck plate like the American Vintage Strat models).

Ah ha! Okay, that makes sense because it's not that old but I didn't buy it new either, thanks!

Glad to help. A lot of people use that "Guitar Dater Project" - that one only goes up to Fender's 2009 serial number prefix. The owners of that site really need to update it or just shut it down; it seems like everyone who uses that site doesn't find their 2010 or later serial number then comes here (or Strat-Talk or The Gear Page) freaked out thinking their recent purchase is a fake.

I didn't think it was fake, I figure some weird export thing or, (wishful thinking), something limited production though I couldn't figure out why.

How true.. I tried dating my new NOS 2011 American Standard at the guitar dater site, and it said "nothing comes up for this guitar"... That kinda freaked me out, thinking I might have possibly gotten a fake (but the Strat played so well I couldn't really believe that..), so I emailed Fender's Consumer Relations with the serial number, and they sent me a great email with all the specs for my new Strat...
